People also experienced significant payroll mistakes and calculation errors, which caused financial stress and frustrating administrative troubles for small business owners.
Some reviewers were happy with the helpful and efficient support they received from dedicated team members who patiently guided them through difficult procedures. These consumers deeply appreciated the prompt communication and professional guidance provided during onboarding sessions, retirement plan management, or complex account updates.

I haven’t been called for payroll in months despite calling Paychex and getting reassured that the next month would be better. I would have given Paychex the highest rating 8-10 yrs ago —- but it’s completely deteriorated .

Thank you for your 5-star review Archie! We appreciate your feedback. If there is anything you need in the future, please email us at [email protected].
The tax department has been extremely difficult to reach by both phone and email. When I submit messages through the secure portal, I don’t receive a copy of my submission, and I never receive any follow-up.
For example, Paychex amended our Q4 2025 filing, but it was rejected by EDD. The filing now needs to be corrected and resubmitted by Paychex, yet I still haven’t received any updates or communication regarding the status. It’s been very frustrating trying to resolve this issue without any response.

Hi Thea, we're sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing, it isn't the service level we strive to provide and we would like to help. If you could message us your client detail, and a good contact number we will research.
Deborah was wonderful, she was able to fix all the issues we had and verify her findings with mine. We anticipate not having any issues with the auto patrolling being deposited to our employees account.

Cannot get a response regarding questions. Talked to multiple employees and am getting run around. I took over this position and need information about our account, products we are paying for, product options and payroll journal notes popping up as last employee did not leave details/train. Paychex staff seems to just want to sell me retirement plans not actually help me get payroll running smoothly or answer product questions. Keep getting told they will find info and get back to me and then hearing nothing or get a call from a different employee told I was interested in buying a different product.

although the name of the new employee was sent to paychex via e-mail. paychex put the name and information about the new employee wrong. paychex issued the payroll package that include the "payroll check", the "payroll journal" and the "Tax Deposit Notice" all wrong. so far it is a simple error that would be corrected. I was wrong. I called and was on the phone with 3 paychex persons for 47 minutes of agony explaining this simple mistake several times. I requested that I get a correct one set of documents. Unfortunately, paychex sent me 3 documents that included the correct name of the employee but the "payroll journal" and the "Tax Deposit Notice” were wrong. not only that the person representing paychex insisted that the information was correct I just have to add or subtract the numbers!!!!! I called again, could not get a supervisor, but the person stated that she will resolve the issue. so far I lost another 23 minutes in addition to the previous 47 minutes. I am waiting to see if this will be resolved.

There is a fascinating dichotomy at your company with superb customer service and awful - and, absurdly bad technical support. As a business owner, who has experienced many challenges over decades, I know when someone or perhaps many need to be terminated (and normally my tolerance level for rewarding incompetence is a window of a few days). Based on the massive number of online poor online reviews - across many different sites - Paychex is not paying attention to the message - at all.
In my business, I start with asking myself if I'm the problem. I have been unable to login to Paychex Flex for more than two weeks. I have tried all of the standard protocol and recommendations for fixing the problem. Clearly, this is not my problem. It is yours.
You have three (3) business days to fix this, or I go back to ADP!

Would give this company a 0 Star if applicable! If you have a 401k issue do not expect to get any help from them. They will give you the run around and tell you every lie they can come up with. They had me on the phone for the last week trying to seek a resolve on my 401k hardship loan. They are combative and vindictive in there call centers and will not do anything to help you, but tell you a lie to get you off the phone.

They charge fines if you don't provide requested information in time, $65 per month when you do NOT run payroll, not able get help even during business hrs
They charge you huge fines if you miss something. I did NOT have any employees for a while and was NOT running any payroll. I realized that I was getting fees for not providing the requested information every month: $ 50- it is NOT state or IRS fees-these fees going to Paychex. I thought if I don't have any employees, then I don't have to worry about it.
If you do NOT run any payroll, they still charge you about $65 per month for NOT doing anything.
So far, almost every call is frustrating- they have an attitude that they don't care to help you at all. I spoke only with one helpful person so far (and speaking with someone helpful is a huge exception for Paychex); he was reasonable and nice, and kindly waived some fees. But I still lost lots of money (lol and nerve cells) dealing with it.
6 months of free payroll promotion ONLY apply if you run the payroll. I didn't run the payroll for a while and was charged for NOT running the payroll.
Called today to help run the payroll 4.25 pm- the gentleman said it is too late. If I want help with it, I have to call in the morning and reach my account specialist.
I already called my account specialist on June 15 and left a message; I didn't get a callback.
Called again to my assigned account specialist today- it went to voicemail again.
I deeply regret getting involved with this company so far.

Payroll company that says they are not responsible for payroll
I hired Paychex to handle payroll and payroll tax filings because I expected a professional payroll company to ensure the correct forms were being filed. During onboarding, I was asked to complete paperwork that Paychex later used to determine my federal payroll tax filing status. However, Paychex filed Form 944 instead of Form 941 for my business.
When the issue was discovered, Paychex placed the responsibility entirely on me rather than accepting any responsibility for its role in establishing and maintaining the filing structure. As a small business owner paying for payroll expertise, I found this very disappointing.
To make matters worse, I have experienced poor communication throughout the process. Multiple emails and voicemail messages to Paychex representatives went unanswered. I also received conflicting information regarding the fees required to correct the issue.
I understand mistakes can happen. What matters is how a company responds when they occur. Unfortunately, my experience has been that Paychex has been unwilling to accept responsibility for an issue involving payroll tax filings while attempting to charge me additional fees to correct it.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Paychex to other small business owners.

Paychex company is an error maker company. If you are a small business owner and want someone to take care of your payroll, please don't think about Paychex. The company have made errors every single year on my account, unbelievable error.

Paychex failed to file a 2025 local tax return for our company, which we paid them to file.
Our office manager first contacted them on May 1st, 2026, and many, many emails have been completely ignored; she's spent hours on hold and/or talking with anyone who she can reach there, because our rep will not return calls.
She's talked to managers, supervisors, and was transferred once allegedly to the tax department to get it sorted out, but that transfer went to a totally different company that had nothing to do with taxes.
This has been an absolute nightmare, and we will soon be facing fines and penalties from the taxing municipality because of Paychex's negligence and complete disregard for our attempts to communicate with them.
This is now SIX WEEKS of attempting to get any sort of response or attention to this matter.

They would not let me leave a no star review thats the only reason they have a 1 star.
Concerns-
Call in 4 times a months to fix issues or constantly ask them in they can do their 1 job - Run payroll..... As a small business this is a waste of time and resources.
(They act as if running payroll is a favor)
There phone system is a joke you are assigned a "payroll specialist" that holds the keys to your account that you will NEVER hear back from. All calls route to their voicemail unless you manipulate the call directory to talk with staff.
After solving issues with system and representative if you get through to someone the issue you "fixed" is fixed that one time and not updated or changed permanently
