Customers frequently complained about terrible customer service, mentioning that representatives rarely answered calls or responded to emails and left urgent issues unresolved for many months. People also experienced significant payroll mistakes and calculation errors, which caused financial stress and frustrating administrative troubles for small business owners. Some reviewers were happy with the helpful and efficient support they received from dedicated team members who patiently guided them through difficult procedures. I am a small business owner

I am a small business owner. I've been using Paychex for almost 10 years. I feel like a "small fish" in a pond. Sometimes I don't a response from my email and when I do a follow up calls why do I have to repeat from A to Z? I end a call if I am speaking to someone from a call center because I just know I am not going to get any results. This time there was a coding issue for my 401(K). After a month with several phone calls and emails, it is not resolved because a code was entered wrong again. So my spouse coudn't do a catchup contribution for several months. I've reached a breakpoint to switch to Paychex competitors.

Quality Steadily Declining

I am the office manager of a business who uses Paychex Flex for payroll and 401k. The "Assigned Payroll Support" agent is a facade- emailing or calling your support representative sends you to a call center or overseas support subcontractor. Each step in correspondence sends you to a separate agent who often misunderstands the thread history, redirecting you off-course from your solution path. When I first started using this software, it was very smooth. But quality and staffing seems to be gutted more and more each quarter. We regularly receive email instructions on systems or action items that mislead us (e.g. "you need to fill out a from 5500 by this date. Click this link to learn how;" the link is broken; contact support to learn that the directive was sent in error). At one point, the company owner was mistakenly locked out of his admin account by a Customer Service Rep, and forced into a non-escapable loop. If we did not have my account registered as a company admin, we would not have been able to run payroll or recover his account. If you are a business owner considering paychex, make sure you allocate 2-4 hours per week for an office administrator to handle Paychex curve balls.

Absolutely horrendous customer service

Absolutely horrendous customer service. I spent more than a month trying to get an answer regarding potential missing funds. I would receive a reply from a different person each time, and no one was willing to actually answer the question. My ‘account rep’ Brittine only answered once despite several requests for help. I replied to her response and never heard from her again. In all, I lasted just over a year before I closed my account altogether. Don’t waste your time.

Absolutely horrible customer service

Absolutely horrible customer service. Im so unsatisfied with the way they handle things im actually starting a full withdraw of my 401k because I don't want any of my money handled by them. Im also going to be shopping around and exploring the possibilities of removing all of our company payroll and benefits for another company.

Run from this company

Run from this company. They're incompetency is unsurpassed. They made mistakes like double paying employees and it was my responsibility to pay the employee overdraft fees when they withdrew the money after realizing their mistake. That was just one nightmare out of many. 401 incompetency where it cost me $12,000 at the end of the year. They claim they take care of everything then when you sign on, they take no responsibility and you're doing their job. I was the admin for the ACA, 401k, and payroll. Their biggest hook is we do everything. You don't have to worry about anything. There were mistakes in the payroll every week. We had to keep reviewing it. Our CSRs were always on vacation so we'd get random ppl who always messed up our payroll. The CSRs would quit, and we'd never receive notice. They'd ship our payroll checks out which were do on Fridays and we'd get them the following Monday, so we'd have to write manual checks, then call Paychex to get credited for the money they already withdrew. Hidden fees. Pay advance I never knew about, but they tried to make it my responsibility when an employee left and didn't pay the loan back. I could go on for five business days of why no one should sign on with this horrible company. Thank god I'm no longer with them. I had the health insurance, 401k and payroll with them. Nightmare!

Avoid This Company – Severe Payroll and Support Issues

Where to start.. Miscalculations of payroll, incorrect tax filing, lack of support, and limited help with any new items. Find a company doing better in the industry. (ADP) Paychex can not handle the needs or the compliance that come with payroll but the burden will fall on you for trusting that they could. Hidden fees probably to make up for all the customers leaving. * Add on- After reaching out to the response they gave on the review, I was given the same business partner contact we have always worked with and that is where it ended.

Glitchy System poor customer service.

Title: Glitchy system, upsell pressure, and poor support – not recommended I switched from Heartland Payroll (now Auris) to Paychex because I was told I would get the same level of service and that they worked with LCPtracker for certified payroll. I also want to acknowledge that there are a few hardworking and dedicated Paychex staff who went out of their way to assist me; those individuals were professional and genuinely tried to help. Unfortunately, my overall experience with the platform has been very negative. In my opinion, the self‑service data upload side of the system is deliberately glitchy and unreliable, which feels like it is designed to push you into buying a higher level of service just to get basic functionality. At the time of this review, my certified payroll ended up scrambled after I tried to raise a complaint, and I found out there is essentially no dedicated complaint division, which is surprising for a company of this size. I was told I would have all the same services I had with Auris. That turned out not to be true. What I actually received was a low‑tier, glitchy product, and then I was advised that I would need to upgrade to a higher‑tier service just to use the AI portion of the platform or even to call in a payroll the way I expected. Getting consistent customer service felt like an act of Congress. Because of repeated issues and the extra costs tied to late payroll runs caused by these glitches, I am now looking for a new provider and, for the time being, leaning toward handling payroll through QuickBooks until I can find a better solution. Based on my experience, I would strongly caution other small contractors and construction businesses: do not expect an entry‑level Paychex package to run smoothly without numerous glitches, and be prepared to pay significantly more each week if your payrolls run late. For me, this system has been a joke, and I recommend looking elsewhere for reliable payroll services. This company can improve their services by offering more on time customer support as they appear to be to busy, overhauling their data base and fix the glitches in the lower level services. Giving customers the same access to the screens being used to fix data on the staff ends

Assigned Service Rep is critical for anyone new to the service.

If you run into any issue that prevents you from fixing it yourself, the assigned rep on your account is a go to option. Zach is and has been critical to getting any problem resolved.

Rude online support

Rude online support. I tried to use it & you have to be active within 3 minutes or they close the chat. Well I had some questions & after the first one was not even answered they said: "You're very welcome! If you have no more questions for me at this time, I will close this chat. Thank you for your partnership. I hope you have a wonderful day! If you do need further assistance, please do open a new WebChat." I did have questions & they didn't give me time to respond & just ended the chat.
