What reviewers say
AI generated
Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently complained about terrible customer service, mentioning that representatives rarely answered calls or responded to emails and left urgent issues unresolved for many months. People also experienced significant payroll mistakes and calculation errors, which caused financial stress and frustrating administrative troubles for small business owners.
Some reviewers were happy with the helpful and efficient support they received from dedicated team members who patiently guided them through difficult procedures. These consumers deeply appreciated the prompt communication and professional guidance provided during onboarding sessions, retirement plan management, or complex account updates.
Auto-generated from all reviews of this business. For reference only.
If I could give zero stars I would! I have been a customer for a few years and there is always an issue. Customer service is horrible, no one gets back to you and the "help line" says one thing and the rep says another. Glad to be done with them!

After answering everything that they needed, they would not get me a price quote. They wanted to call over a hundred times and text over and over instead of just quoting me a price there, he truly are the worst. Calling at seven in the morning, calling at nine at night.

More Effort Than It's Worth, Plus Undisclosed Fees
I am the single employee in my company, I was spending 20-30 minutes/week working on my own payroll. I decided to join Paychex to do my payroll for me. They gave me a great deal of 6 months free and a good monthly rate. I signed up and it seemed to go smoothly, I worked with people who sounded like they knew what they were doing. That was the end of the good service.
After the first month, I got a $60 charge for something. I reached out and asked and they said it was because I didn't run payroll that month. Apparently they have a minimum of one payroll/month or they charge. I said I had a deal with no charges for 6 months and they reversed it. the next month I was sure to make a payroll, but I was hit with another $60 charge. This time it was because it didn't make it before the deadline (the 28th). I transfer the money myself, they don't see it so there was no delay in the funds, yet they charged me a fee for not making the payroll in time to make the transfer.
The third month was January and they sent me my tax information, which was incorrect. They didn't have my pre-Paychex amounts correct (too much tax was charged). When they attempted to fix it, they actually double taxed me and submitted the double amount to the IRS causing my account to be over drawn, which incurred fees.
After emailing and calling several people (no less than 8 different people), they were able to sort it out and refunded my account.
After all this, I realized I spent more time fixing their problems than doing my payroll myself. I cancelled my service after four months. Shortly after, I received a bill for $400 for all kinds of miscellaneous charges. Now it is three months later and I'm still trying to recover my $400 (after no less than 10 emails). They keep saying the request has been submitted and it will take 3-5 business days to process the refund after the request has been approved.
The problem is that the people working for Paychex are not smart, they don't understand the numbers, and there isn't one dedicated person who knows your account. They all seem like they want to help, but I don't think any of them are actually educated in finance or accounting.
I recommend using a local small business to do your payroll needs. Keep it local and help small businesses. Plus you can go to their office if you need help.
Learn as you go...

The transition from just processing payroll through Paychex to Paychex PEO has been nothing short of a disaster.

Paychecks carry out a severe mistake in our payroll and taxes of 2025 .
Once we mentioned they tried to fix the problem but after 6 months going through one specialist to another still it’s unresolved , apparently they made such negligent job that they can’t resolve it . We are holding this company accountable and before any legal action they need to come up with a solution

This company is like a parasite, I called and canceled services twice. They even actually refunded me a couple months. But lo and behold they continued to charge me after that upon reviewing my bank statements. Unreal!

The transition was the worst - Paychex could not get anything right from transferring over data to new system. Even when problems and errors were brought to your attention it was not addressed in a timely manner. The process for the employees to register with the new program is atrocious. When we called no one was answering their phone - they were unavailable like at meetings etc. Example - employee loans, garnishments and child support - and it still is not correct in 2 of our companies. Paychex could not even get it correct on the payroll journal layout on entering vacations, etc. We even received emails saying payroll is due and we are waiting on Paychex to correct their errors.
I am not sure why Paychex has such a difficult time but for a large corporation to function like this - I would not refer another company to Paychex. The employee Benefit manuals that were given to us is not a good representation of Paychex. I know there are more errors and problems, but I am stopping at this point.

I ordered payroll to be run for last month, and I just noticed today that they didn't run that payroll. Once again, another issue that I had to call and waste my time dealing with. Not very good at what you do and I am currently looking at other payroll companies to give my business to.

Our last three payrolls have been frustrating. Our person was out of the office twice and it took hours to track down who was going to process it. It is normally released by 2PM and has been 5Pm or later.

I was with paychex for almost 19 years. I canceled on May 7 and they never told me there would be a final bill. On June 10th they deducted $309 out of my checking account without any notice. I figured since I canceled they wouldn’t keep taking money out of my account. When I called them about it and asked why no one told me about this charge and why I didn’t receive a final invoice emailed or mailed to me, their response was, I should have logged into my account and checked even though I had already canceled. What a truly ridiculous answer. Any company I’ve ever dealt with before has sent me a final invoice but paychex expects me to check the account I cancele. Absolutely unprofessional of them.

I have been working with Paychex for 2 years trying to correct a mistake they made with the IRS no less and they are now threatening to seize my property! They are beyond incompetent and there is NO follow through. NO ONE will take responsibility for correcting the issue and we have to start over each time we reach out and the players keep changing as it must be a horrible place to work!

Paychex is an absolutely horrendous and incompetent company. They constantly make mistakes/errors on payroll submissions, and they don't take responsibility for them. They submitted our payroll twice in one week recently. Before that, they mistakenly paid an employee 242 hours in one week. They charge exorbitant fees for the smallest of services. Please stay far away from this company and save yourself the stress.

Poor Customer Support - retirement services particularly bad
I've been using Paychex Flex for 3 years. The UX of the website is clunky and poorly designed but it works. I'm writing a 2-star review today because the retirement services department customer service is shockingly bad. I've been trying to find out the different investment options available to me through my 401k through Paychex Flex and this request has stumped them. They can't email an answer. The LiveChat is a perpetual loop of people who can't help. I called 877-244-1771 for their retirement services department and they were entirely unhelpful. It takes a lot to want to spend time writing a negative review but they have earned their poor rating.

I have to babysit the staff members so they can write notes on a client file so they don't ask so many questions over and over. I can't believe fax takes 5 days to receive my forms.

This company is absolutely abysmal. I am a former employee of a company that use Paychex and the user experience is horrendous. I was recently laid off due to downsizing - it took Paychex over 3 weeks to get me my Cobra election information by which time my insurance had been cut off and I had to cancel some important medical appointments. The only way you can opt in is by mailing a check - it’s archaic. I sent my check with my elections, after 2.5 weeks my health insurance got reinstated and then on the 4th of the month I received the packed with the ridiculous little mail in vouchers to send my check in each month advising that premiums are due on the 1st. Their correspondence - terrible. Their customer service - terrible. Their phone options to get you to who you need to talk to - terrible. Their lack of self-serve and technical options for elections and payment of benefits - non-existent. As an employee I’d caution anyone getting a job with a company that uses Paychex and I’d caution any employer that wants to run their business effectively and keep their employees happy to steer clear of this circus. To not have a direct debit or online payment option for continuation of benefits in this day is embarrassing. Paychex you should be embarrassed and I sincerely hope that the trust pilot reviews of your company stop people from using your services.

Customer Support is beyond poor, the worst of any company anywhere.
They sent me an e-mail to choose my benefits during the Open Enrollment period. I clicked the link and logged in but there was a server error for the Open Enrollment page. I chatted with 2 people, both of whom kept asking me to clarify the issue, though I had explained it in great detail. They kept asking me to confirm that I wanted to change my phone number, though I never once mentioned my phone number. Finally someone told me I had to call the phone number to get help. The first person transferred me to another department. The system there said, "Press 1 for this, Press 2 for that", but none of my selections were registered. I gave up and called back. The woman who answered this time actually asked me, "So you want to update your phone?"
As near as I can tell they just tell their representatives to keep asking people over and over if they want to update their phone, in the hope that that is why the person is calling, because they aren't intelligent enough to actually decipher plain English describing what the problem is. After an hour I was finally told there was an outage. I don't understand why it took an hour of my time to find out there was an outage. Dealing with this company is extremely frustrating. Companies that value their employees should not deal with Paychex, because Paychex is only in the business of wasting employees' time.

An employee of a company that use to work with them first month was awesome after that day late all the way up to a week late. This last pay check. Useless company. Last pay check is not even the right date. Would hope people read reviews so they don’t have to go through what my boss had to as the stress on her and the many single mothers employed by her was horrible.would not wish this experience on anyone

I reached out to PAYCHEX chat because my last paycheck was for 10% of the hours I worked. My employer said "Paychex made the error." Paychex clearly does NOT CARE. I wonder how Tianna would feel if she only received 10% of her paycheck.
