Beware

Beware. They just want your money and they’ll ignore you the website guys organization is not ‘free’. I worked with them to build a website only to be ignored once I chose to cancel - it became one charge after another. They pretend to be legit when they are not.

The free service was materially different from what I was led to expect

I applied to The Free Website Guys after the service was presented as a free professional website-building service. After my application was accepted, I was asked to open an IONOS hosting account as part of their process, complete the onboarding requirements, provide my photograph and business information, and attend what was described as a website design call. Before the call, I had already decided to proceed with the standard free option. However, the call focused mainly on encouraging me to purchase a paid custom website. A custom temporary website was subsequently prepared without my request or prior approval. The paid option was initially presented to me at $84.99 per year and was immediately reduced to $19.99 per year after I declined. When I asked why the lower price had not been presented initially, I did not receive a clear explanation. The main issue arose when I asked what would actually be delivered under the free option. I was then informed that they would provide an un customized Astra or Divi template and that I would be responsible for replacing the text, images, and other content and customizing the website myself. That was materially different from my understanding of the service when I applied, purchased hosting, completed the onboarding process, and attended the design call. Had this limitation been clearly disclosed at the beginning, I could have made an informed decision before investing my time in the process. I ultimately decided not to proceed, cancelled the IONOS hosting account, and requested that the temporary website be removed and that my photograph, personal information, and business information not be retained or used for promotional purposes. My initial request was acknowledged, but I had to follow up again because I had not received confirmation that the requested actions had been completed. To be fair, the custom design produced by their designer looked professional, and I appreciate the effort that went into it. Had the $19.99 option been presented clearly and transparently from the beginning, I likely would have accepted it. Instead, the process moved from a “free” service, to an $84.99 paid option, and then to $19.99 after I declined. That sequence, rather than the price itself, is what undermined my trust. I am also aware that many customers report positive experiences. This review reflects only my own experience. My concern is primarily about transparency. The difference between the free deliverable, the work expected from the customer, and the paid custom option should be clearly explained before customers are asked to purchase hosting, provide content, and complete the onboarding process. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the service without much clearer upfront disclosure.
