A good platform with stable video connection and chat. There were a number of potential tutors available at a reasonable cost and the first one I chose has proven excellent. Emma was able to adapt her teaching to my needs (C1 oral examination in 4 weeks) and offer a constructive programme. The only lesson that failed to go forward was due to train cancellations during the extreme heat i.e. nothing to do with either the tutor or the platform. The use of chat to correct errors and form a Development Plan is one of the strengths of Italki.

A great platform for finding personal tutors. The process of searching for and comparing tutors is great. Booking lessons was also pretty straightforward. The only thing I find slightly annoying is that all transactions are carried out in USD and it's not super clear what the most cost effective way of paying for lessons is.

I love Italki! I am really passionate about teaching and would not choose any other platform to support my endeavors as a teacher. I get to meet people of every age and nationality. The admin is efficient and the website is easy to use. The app is so useful too. Many students are able to contact me about lessons and book effortlessly. I enjoy the autonomy as a teacher with regards to hours, prices and content.

The teacher is the best one ever to prepare for the OET exam. She helped me pass in just a couple weeks of classes after my struggle in the listening part of the exam.
She is highly recommended for anyone who wants to be well prepared for the exam and nail it! Besides, since she is also in the health field, she knows the technical terms and words needed to pass in the test. She is very professional, knowledgeable and an expert in the OET! If you need to take it, just take classes with her!

Deep disappointment: Unprofessional behavior by tutor has undermined my trust in the platform
I am writing this review with a feeling of deep disappointment. My recent experience with a community tutor from Malaysia has completely undermined my trust in italki and shattered my self-confidence, leaving me feeling deeply insecure. The platform has a massive loophole: it allows unprofessional tutors to abruptly block a student, which completely strips the student of their ability to leave an honest review about how they were treated.
Earlier in our chat, he confirmed that Wednesdays at 11:00 AM worked well for him. Trusting this, I submitted a lesson request. He ignored my request, leaving it pending from Monday without any communication. Then, on the exact day of the lesson—just one or two hours before the start—he rejected the request and immediately blocked my account, without even leaving a single message in our chat to explain the reason.
As a language learner, being left hanging for days and then rejected and blocked without a single word of explanation is incredibly discouraging. It made me feel so insecure about my English that I am now genuinely afraid to restart my speaking practice. It is shocking that italki protects the tutor's flawless 5.0 rating by silencing the student and leaving them to deal with the emotional fallout of such treatment.
Italki needs to fix this blocking system immediately, as it completely misleads future clients.

I have absolutely LOVED italki ever…
I have absolutely LOVED italki ever since they started.
I eventually signed up as a tutor and language students in 2021. The platform has changed a lot. As one of the earlier users I don't like the changes, the interface, the loss of it feeling like a joyful platform and it becoming increasingly just an employer with tightening rules. I am a responsible person but I don't want to be given platform warnings for turning down students I don't want to work with or can't work with for any reason.
The freedom to choose hours and clients is what drew me to italki. I don't like the overzealous rating systems. The intrusiveness of it.
A simple star rating is enough.
Students at the lower budget range can be curiously demanding, which of course they are entitled to be but for $15 it simply isn't worth it if you live in a Western country. It WOULD be fine if italki wasn't now so heavy handed with it's too frequent nudges to do conform to parameters.
For $15 I want to be able to be relatively relaxed and not feel hounded by the ratings system. I got mostly 5 stars but it still makes me anxious and I didn't sign up for anxiety. Originally the platform wasn't like that. It has lost it's original appeal.
I dislike the new fees structure. I don't like to sell lesson packages, and I am punished with higher fees for preferring 1x payments and small packages.
(The higher the lesson number inside a package the lower the service fee. I think the referral / service fees are too high.)
Would I still recommend italki? YES. I would. A new user wouldn't have the original, fabulous, italki to compare to and wouldn't know that there is a change in atmosphere and I still think that both italki tutors, teachers and students are for the most part fantastic !

I have a great instructor who works at a pace that suits me. The fee is competitive and the italki website and digital infrastructure is easy to navigate and has no functionality problems. I highly recommend italki.
