Overall it was a decent experience. However, I can't agree with them justifying charging me for self-employed state tax prep when I worked in another state briefly and was not self-employed there (only got a W-2).
Thanks for sharing your experience, Justin. We understand how the pricing structure can feel frustrating, especially when your situation involved a mix of income types across states. Feature and tier access is based on the overall return requirements, which can sometimes feel misaligned with how a customer views their specific situation. We appreciate the honest feedback as it helps us continue improving how we communicate our pricing and product tiers.
OMG... That was so..so..easy..your software is so user friendly....Thank you so very much
That kind of reaction makes our day, Soamnauth! 😄 We're so glad the experience felt smooth and easy from start to finish. Thank you for taking the time to share this, and we hope to see you again next tax season!
I know nothing at all about taxes and money, but this was super easy and took less than half an hour
That's amazing to hear, Holly! Taxes can feel overwhelming, especially if it's not your thing, so we're really glad TaxAct made it feel simple and quick. Half an hour and done — that's exactly what we aim for! 🎉
I thought my taxes were filed. I never received any follow-up telling me that they weren't.
That sounds like a really stressful situation, Jerry, and we completely understand why you'd be frustrated if you were left uncertain about whether your return was actually submitted. The payment and filing steps are separate in TaxAct, and it sounds like the distinction between the two may not have been clear enough during your experience. That's genuinely important feedback, and we appreciate you sharing it.
The chat bot was AWESOME up until the very end. I added my foreign-earned self-employment income to schedule C and then filled out form 2555 for the full foreign tax exclusion. This kept giving me an error that I was missing qualifying information. I eventually went in and added one more useless form and then the e-file was accepted. The bot at that point was going in circles and couldn't help me. That was confusing, but everything up to that point was great.
Thanks for the detailed feedback, Victoria! We're so glad the chat bot made most of your filing experience smooth and enjoyable. We're sorry to hear it fell short when navigating the foreign-earned income and Form 2555 process — that's clearly an area we can improve, and your experience helps us understand where the gaps are. If you run into similar issues next filing season, our support team is happy to help at https://www.taxact.com/support/request.
The schedule C prompts were a bit confusing
Thanks for the feedback, Gina! We're glad the experience was still worth 4 stars overall. We hear you on the Schedule C prompts, and we'll take that note to heart as we work to make things clearer for everyone.
easy to follow and prompts were self explanatory.
Thank you, Rhett! We're so glad the process felt intuitive and easy to navigate. That's exactly the experience we aim to deliver every time. 😊
easy to use the application
Glad to hear it was a smooth experience! Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. 😊
Very simple and user friendly, even for beginners. I appreciate the hand-holding step-by-step process and error review for each section.
Thank you, Michael! We're so glad the step-by-step guidance and error review made the process feel manageable and stress-free. That's exactly the experience we aim to deliver for every user, whether it's their first time or their fifteenth. 😊
It was straight forward and the software walked me through the process.
That's great to hear, Allen! We're glad the process felt smooth and easy to follow. Thanks for choosing TaxAct this year! 😊
It was great to get expert help from a tax act rep towards the end of the return when I just wanted an expert to go over my return. I gave tax act 4 stars because it lacked the 8582 form needed to offset my passive rental income.
Thank you for the kind words about our expert help, gordenlam! We're glad we could be there when you needed a second set of eyes on your return. We also appreciate you flagging the missing 8582 form — that's genuinely useful feedback, and we'll make sure it gets to the right team. If you need any further assistance, feel free to reach out at https://www.taxact.com/support/request.
SmartFile assistant was very helpful to quickly answer questions. I also appreciate that I can file for free with a foreign address as not all of the free software offer this. Excellent user experience!
Thank you, Nicole! We're so glad the SmartFile assistant made the process smooth and your questions were answered quickly. It's great to know that filing free as an expat with a foreign address made a real difference for you, and we'll keep working to offer that accessibility. 🌍
Glad to hear it went well! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and for choosing TaxAct. 😊
That's what we love to hear, Doug! So glad the process felt smooth and easy for you. Thanks for taking the time to share and for choosing TaxAct! 🎉
it was a little complicated until I remembered I had to take my teacher's retirement, and then the program had me fill out the forms necessary to get my refund. generally an easy process and I will continue to use Taxact in the future.
Thank you, Judi! It's great to hear that once you remembered to include your teacher's retirement, everything clicked into place and the program guided you through the right forms. We appreciate your loyalty and look forward to helping you again next tax season! 😊
Worst Tax Filing Experience I've Ever Had I purchased TaxAct's Full Service package because I wanted professional help filing my business and personal taxes. Instead, I spent months chasing support, trying to understand what was filed, what wasn't filed, and how to contact someone who could actually help. The software interface is one of the most confusing I've used. Even the TaxAct representatives I spoke with struggled to explain where things were located or how to access the features they were asking me to use. Some of the issues I experienced: - Messages would direct me to log in, even when I was already logged in - Support chats would disappear or restart, forcing me to explain the same issue repeatedly - I was directed to the wrong departments multiple times - Phone support transfers failed, resulting in dropped calls and surveys instead of actual assistance - I was told to use messaging systems that either didn't work or couldn't be located The biggest issue was with my New Hampshire business return. I paid for Full Service and was led to believe my business taxes were being handled. Only after my federal return was completed did I learn that TaxAct would not file my New Hampshire business return because it could not be electronically filed. This was never clearly communicated up front. As a result, months later I was still trying to determine: - Whether my New Hampshire return had been prepared - Whether it had been filed - What I was supposed to do next TaxAct eventually generated the New Hampshire forms, but the documents were watermarked "Do Not File," leaving me with no clear instructions on how to complete the process. What should have been a straightforward tax filing turned into countless hours of confusion, support chats, phone calls, and follow-up work that I ultimately had to do myself. I chose Full Service because I wanted expertise and guidance. Instead, I ended up spending significant time researching tax issues on my own because I could not get clear answers from TaxAct support. If you want your tax return to turn into a circus, then hire the pack of clowns from TaxAct, and you'll get your own personal circus experience.
Ryan, thank you for taking the time to share this in detail. The experience you've described, particularly around the New Hampshire business return and the lack of clear communication about what was and wasn't included in Full Service, is genuinely frustrating, and we understand why you feel let down after investing that much time and money. The support issues you encountered, including dropped calls, disappearing chats, and being redirected repeatedly, are not the experience we want anyone to have. Our team will review the specifics of your situation and reach out to you soon.
We hear you, Ryan. Pricing and add-on costs like Xpert Assist can feel like a lot, especially when you're just trying to get your taxes done. We appreciate you sharing this feedback, as it genuinely helps us understand how customers experience our product.
the step by step instructions. easy to follow. made it extremely easy.
That's wonderful to hear, Letitia! We're so glad the step by step guidance made the process feel easy and stress free. Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊
Taxact is the best way to prepare my taxes in my opinion! i have been using it for at least a decade.
Thank you so much, Lynette! A decade of trust means the world to us, and we're so glad TaxAct has been your go-to all these years. Here's to many more tax seasons together! 🎉
