Nanoleaf is a green technology company that's transforming the way we light up our world with impeccably designed, ultra energy efficient LED lighting.
Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently struggle with unresponsive support teams, difficult communication channels, and unhelpful handling of warranty claims when things go completely wrong. Consumers also encounter major ongoing issues with hardware quality, frustrating connectivity failures, and unexpected shipping delays that leave physical orders stuck or completely missing for weeks.
Some reviewers were happy with the nice products, beautiful lighting designs, and timely delivery services received initially without any major problems. Others noted that the equipment can look amazing once successfully installed, though achieving that operational state often requires considerable patience during the initial setup process.
I purchased two nanoleaf canvas packs for two bedrooms. One worked for a few years flawlessly until an automatic firmware update killed it stone dead. Then a few days ago the second one died after yet another firmware update. No response from either unit. I opened one up which is a destructive process. Nothing untoward inside. Very clean. No burnt components or chips etc. Having read many reviews most have the same problem. Dies after a firmware update. It would seem there's a fundamental design flaw with the canvas edition. Far too many reported failures of the control square. I now have 18 squares which are totally useless without a controller which I'm loathe to replace. I've bought a few nanoleaf products over the years but no more. There is no longevity in these products.
I bought the "Matter Smart Multicolor Outdoor String Lights" and one was not working when first switched on. I mean that's pretty low quality control off the bat. Then another stopped working within 10 minutes. I tried turning off mains and resetting but nothing. I've realised that there is no clear way to initiate a return; only to set up a support ticket and no idea when someone will respond. This is quite scammy considering the amount of other people who have had the same issue.
To nanoleaf of you're seeing this
What is the retuns address for faulty items, how do I initiate it right now?
Nanoleaf Canvas. Had 2 controllers break on me within a period of 2 years. I had no excessive use of my leafs. Used them maybe 2-3 times a week. Contacted the support and because its now out of warranty they want me to pay for a new controller-unit. Im not funding this company any more than I already have. The controller units are obviously defective even when they are new. Whats the point? Buy a new controller unit every year? Now I have a bunch of lights glued to my wall that dont do anything for me. Check the numerous reviews out there which clearly shows that there is a massive problem with the controller units malfunctioning. Do not buy.
3 years ago I bought a Nanoleaf shapes hexagone pack.
They have been working fine until 6 months ago.
I found out that the controller broke, and it seems to be a recurring problem as many other customers have experienced the same issue.
This kind of electronics is not supposed to fail (unlike a light bulb or phone battery that is a consumable).
To me it is either that their electronics was poorly designed or that they intentionally make it break. In either cases it is clearly not worth the +100$ you’re paying for this.
At the beginning they started to offer free replacement controllers, but that’s not the case anymore, they are just selling them, my warranty has expired anyway.
I am never buying Nanoleaf again.
I am going to throw the working panels in the trash can. I’d rather have no decorating light than being swindled (I will not buy a controller every two years).
I have three Nanoleaf controllers.
When i asked Nanoleaf a replacement, they were making the process so complicated.
Instead of helping they do not listen and do not provide a solution to our problems.
I know my controller is dead but they did not want to provide a new one.
It is an appealing product but the service of Nanoleafs makes you want to stop using this product.
Such a shame...
Shapes controllers fail on a frighteningly regular basis, check YouTube. Support is shocking with standard email & templates. Been waiting a week and got an email suggesting fixes which was the same as the email I got when I raised the ticket. No end of button press combinations will fix a dead controller.
Garbage Product!!!! which should be in trash.
These days everyone can sell anything to anyone. That is any garbage product like all nanoleaf products are are being sold to customer for wild amounts of money.
Have 4 sets in my appartment and they are just not working. This is horrible waste of your time and money. So please avoid it. The developers of the electronics are just the last of the last. They have no idea what they are doing. Not talking about the potentiual security risks you are opening your doors when connecting them to your home network. Any hacker and nanoleaf people can access and control anything inside your network simply becuase that is how the device is working. They can do anything inside your home network. Buy Phillips Hue or some other decent brand, and not this garbage.
I have had various Nanoleaf light sets and id say heavily avoid. Every single set has managed to break and usually its such a common issue when you Google it the entirety of the internet has faced the same issue.
Their support is not even worth bothering with as they rarely even reply unless its a automated message, the two years warranty is just a misleading statement. For the price of their products, you would think they would not break to such common issues (Which they fail to acknowledge) and would provide at least acceptable after-sales and support, which they do not but claim to on their website.
You would be better of saving your money and going with Govee products instead, save money on better quality items that if should fail, knowing their Support will at least reply and help and make things right.
Their customer service is so bad it's a joke.
Over 2 weeks of waiting for a replacement for my second controller hub in 1 year after 1 failed after the other.
No answers whatsoever from their customer support, and incredibly frustrating products that never work.
I wish I could go back and ask my partner not to get this as a Christmas gift. Huge waste of money.
Stay way.
In the last two years I have spent over £2000 on Nanoleaf products for around the home, Shapes, Canvas, Elements and even the Christmas tree lights and when you first get them and install them. they work. But very quickly have issues, caused by firmware upgrades, Downloading Scenes to them or even a power cut has broken one of the units and nothing will get it paired again. They simply are not fit to be on the mass market and are so temperamental and unreliable. For the price they charge, Nanoleaf either need to fix the products to be stable or lower the price, or be honest and say they are experimetal products and can't be relied on to conitnue to function as they keep changing the software and breaking them.
Unbelievably Bad Customer Support – A Masterclass in Incompetence
If you’re considering buying from Nanoleaf, DON’T—unless you enjoy frustration, months of wasted time, and the absolute worst customer service experience imaginable.
I opened a support ticket on December 1st, 2024. As of March 6, 2025—after 21 back-and-forth communications—the issue remains unresolved. Let that sink in. Over three months of dealing with a company that seems utterly incapable of addressing a basic support request.
The sheer level of incompetence, lack of communication, and total disregard for the customer is astonishing. Responses are slow, unhelpful, and often contradict previous ones. It’s as if Nanoleaf’s support team operates in a vacuum where accountability and problem-solving don’t exist.
This company should be studied as a case study in mismanagement and customer neglect. Their failure to provide even the most basic level of support is appalling.
If Nanoleaf actually cares about its customers, I challenge them to publicly address why it takes over three months and 21 interactions to fix an issue. But based on my experience, I won’t hold my breath.
Save yourself the headache—avoid Nanoleaf at all costs.
I seem to need to get replacement controllers every few years, so they seem very unreliable long term. I’ve had Shapes for about 4 years and Lines for less than 1 year. I’ve had 3 controllers fail for Shapes and 1 fail for Lines. Getting replacements is a very slow process if in warranty and regularly out of stock if considering to buy a new one.
Bought a pack of three bulbs one does not work. This company is doing everything they can to NOT replace it, faulty product they want you to bin and buy. Endless pointless emails requesting the same things, asked me to send a video on a connection issues, how dumb. It’s been weeks now, Apple need to stop selling this product as I used their name and quality as a reference. I will be contacting them.
If you want reliability do not buy from this company, if you do forget about customer service it is the worst.
I have a dead bulb within a year
so i have contacted Support on 28/11/24 and i have provided photos videos every single piece of evidence and information and its been a month of radio silence
I just got a mail back today on 9/2/25 Asking if its connected to the app...
My brother you have had video evidence for 2 months
Broken item and want to charge me a restocking fee for returning.
Bulb doesn't work and won't turn on. Emailed on 14th January to ask for a return and refund. Repeated advised to update firmware and reset bulb, despite explaining multiple times that it won't turn on, so I can't connect to it.
Today been offered a refund for store credit only with a restocking fee of £5. Restocking for a broken item? I don't want to return it because I changed my mind. I want to return it because it is broken.
I've had an extremely negative online shopping experience. At the end of last year, I ordered four items. Three were delivered, but one was missing. Despite sending six or seven emails to the company, with the delivery note to show only 3 items were sent, and I have received no response. At the moment they've have essentially taken my money without providing the product. My next step will be to send a formal letter of complaint. If I still don't hear back, I will have to pursue a chargeback through my credit card company. This has been a truly awful experience.
