Just use Lichess

Chess.com is terrible. First off they paywall a bunch of shit behind a subscription, they are profit over player, their "kids" version ChessKids is also trash, but were not talking about that, apparently they've dabbled into stocks, nfts, and fraud, lichess is faster and isnt paywalled af shit, just use that. And if you reply, Chess.com, I want a HUMAN to respond and give an actual response, not just some "wE'Re SorRy tHAT U no Like GreEdy cHeSs webSite aNd BlaH bLah BlAH NNIUmnyuGtyfTYuyBtyfgHIYG6Te4W23wqERDFGHjknHVRxeZWEWWawaWserCvfg" Just use Lichess people. Don't use Chess.com. Ever.

Good app but poor monetary-related policies

The app is fine, albeit some of the escalations in functionality seem too expensive and should be available at lower tiers if membership. One seriously poor design feature is that premium members get "vacation" to exceed their allotted time to move on long chess games. If three days isn't enough time for you to come up with a move, and if you are active in the platform but not making a move, then you should time out on the game just like speed chess. I've complained four times on the same person in the same game and they do nothing. Ruining the experience so I probably won't renew. You shouldn't be able to buy more time to make a move. Dumb.

Thank you for this feedback. Just this year we've made a major update to reduce the amount of time available to players to pause their Daily Chess games. Check out this article for more information: www.chess.com/news/view/announcing-new-vacation-time-system

Lichess is just better.

Lichess is just better. Chess.com is so anti-beginner-friendly it isn't even funny. I am 936 Rapid on Chess.com. I used to play a lot, and I still do play. I will keep using Chess.com, but the number of times it wants you to buy a membership is just sad. IT'S A DAMN CHESS WEBSITE. LET PEOPLE PLAY CHESS FOR FREE. Also, puzzles are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. It's all back-rank, mate-in-two puzzles over and over again. The number of sandbaggers is crazy. You guys say stopping cheating and sandbagging is your top priority, but it's not fun when I get matched against someone who plays like a 2000 FIDE player. I don't care that you guys give me rating back after I play against a cheater or a sandbagger. I just want to get better and play people around my level without them using FREAKING STOCKFISH. And THREE PUZZLES A DAY??? WHAT IF PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO PAY ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY DOLLARS A YEAR just to get more puzzles and more than one game review? Why should basic features of a CHESS WEBSITE be locked behind a subscription? I understand that you need to make money, but there is a difference between offering premium features and making the free experience feel intentionally limited. Chess.com also constantly pushes Chessable, premium lessons, memberships, and other paid features. At some point, it stops feeling like you're trying to help people improve at chess and starts feeling like you're trying to squeeze money out of them. But, even I use chessable. Neither chess.com nor chessable are bad websites just because of their content, it's just that THEY WANT YOUR WALLET. I don't hate Chess.com. I actually like playing on it, and I'll probably keep using it. But that doesn't mean I can't criticize it. The platform has a huge community and a lot of good features, but the free experience is ridiculously restrictive compared to what other chess websites offer. Lichess feels like a website made by people who genuinely want you to PLAY CHESS. Chess.com feels like a website made by people who want you to PLAY CHESS as long as you pay them first. AND YOU LITERALLY GET 150 MIL A YEAR. IS THAT NOT ENOUGH. THE CEO IS A MULTI MILLONARE. FOR A CHESS WEBSITE. HELP PEOPLE GET BETTER, NOT BECOME CHESS STREET HUSTLERS BECAUSE THEY CANT AFFORD RENT BECAUSE OF THEIR DIAMOND MEMBERSHIP.

Thank you for this feedback. We know it's an investment, but we truly believe in the value of our training tools for players who are serious about improving their chess skills. We also offer three different membership levels at monthly or annual rates. For free accounts, we've increased the access to Lessons and Coach to once per day, and we're also considering potential alternative membership offerings for the future. Don't forget we have seasonal discounts as well! However, we understand if you opt to stick with a free account, and it will always be free to play chess on Chess.com!

Players cheat and use Unsportsmanlike…

Players cheat and use Unsportsmanlike conduct to win in any means nessisary. I have a score of 100 and I get paired with people in the 200 for skill levels. I have had to report SEVERAL players in a row for using the same technique of just moving the queen around the board and not actually playing the game as its meant to be played. The ONLY way to get set up with actual players is to pay the premiums, I have had the last 5-10 of my games get stalled because the player will park their queen on the home row and just take everything without moving a single other piece.

Reply from Chess.com2026-08-03

Thank you for this feedback. Moving one's queen a lot is not considered cheating in chess, and it actually can often be a very risky strategy! For tips on how to exploit this strategy from opponents, make sure to check out the Lessons section in the Learn menu. We have tens of millions of active players, so you're playing chess with real people around the world! Game pairings are not manipulated, nor are there bot accounts in use by Chess.com. If you suspect an opponent of cheating, you can tap their avatar to report it. We immediately ban any player found to be cheating!

New accounts restricted from participating in forum discussions

I created account so I could participate in forum discussions. I'm a beginner and prefer to learn using a standalone program such as ChessMaster. However, Chess.com appears to have restrictions that apply to new accounts that requires one to play more games to be able to participate in forum discussions. Chess.com appears to make things difficult enough to force one to buy a subscription. Chess.com may be 5 star for some, but not for me.

Sorry for the difficulties! Messaging restrictions are in place on new accounts as an anti-spam measure. However, after playing a few games and activating your account, you'll be able to post in forums. Thank you for this feedback. Even if someone only cheats in part of a game, we can detect it and we immediately close the account! We're constantly researching and expanding our detection methods to keep the game as far as possible. We're also looking into more ways that we could address the after-effect for the opponents of cheaters, beyond rating adjustments. This matters to us!

I used to enjoy playing chess online

I used to enjoy playing chess online. This week in 5 games played 3 were cheating and chess.com can’t handle it. Whatever you write or explain you don’t deserve a single dollar for any subscription. If you can’t handle it find a way or don’t charge people. And no excuse , no excuse, your management is a disgrace.

Reply from Chess.com2026-07-27

As new methods to cheat are developed, so too do we expand our detection methods! We're able to very quickly detect cheating in the vast majority of cases, regardless of the method to cheat that has been used. You cannot delete your account if you signed up using Google SSO, it's not possible within the UI and the Help/Support chat clearly isn't aware of this limitation. I want to delete my account, they don't want me to, classic behaviour from an app that relies on user addiction to make money.

Deceptive platform, forcing you to play bots!

This site feels like a complete scam. You log in expecting a fair game against human opponents, but they match you up with bots instead. There is absolute zero transparency—when you reach out to support to ask why this is happening, they never offer any sort of explanation or help. To make matters even worse, I am 100% convinced that their system is illegally monitoring my computer. I highly recommend staying away and finding a different platform to play chess.

Ratings are unreal

Ratings are unreal. A 1000 at any moment will play at a 2000 rated play. When you lose with black, expect to play black again. If you lose with white, expect to play white again. If you aren't interested in playing the same color back to back, aborting that game will not work. They'll insist you play the color they select until they decide it is okay to play the other color regardless of what you want. Since you lost with a color, you may need to play another color to lift your spirits. Chess.com could care less lol. Your efforts to get a different color by aborting the game you do not want to play results in their insisting you play because "you pressed the button" to play. There is nothing like losing rating points because you lose your inspiration to having to play the same color over and over. When you win with a color, they will more than likely change you to the other color next game. Get the theme? They want you to struggle so that you pay to play. If you are a pay to play like I am, they still need you to lose because if increases their potential for revenue. Soon as you win 10 in a row, you will then find that the next 10 opponents will not blunder before you. As a matter of fact, your opponents begin to play as if they were sent to defeat you. Suddenly when they have you beaten, they can't seem to take a piece you blunder or see the check mate. Suddenly their rating is reduced for the remainder of the game as they miss opportunity after opportunity to end the game. Hmmm... Seems fishy. Just imagine how annoyed you feel about having to watch the hit man pretend he doesn't see anything all of a sudden. When all game he saw everything you could do like a bot. The only thing that makes chess.com popular is that it is difficult to gain elo at a rating you are able to obtain at other playing sites. Meaning it is where you will be challenged. If you are a 800 at chess.com, you are probable really a 1200, but they won't let you get their without a paid account.

Reply from Chess.com2026-07-20

Sorry for the difficulties! Your color in the game is selected randomly, so this means you can have streaks with white or black. However, canceling games frequently with one color will result in the system pairing you with that color more often. You can choose your color in unranked games, games versus Friends, or in games versus the Bots. Game pairings on Chess.com are not manipulated in any way. Chess is very difficult, and we all experience losing streaks as well as winning streaks. If you suspect a player of cheating, you can report it by tapping their avatar. Our moderation stats are shared in monthly reports like this one: www.chess.com/article/view/chesscom-update-june-2026#FairPlay
