Very limited flexibility in changing or cancelling subscription. Subscription model is expensive. Thinking of changing Hp printer to another model which offers ink tanks rather than cartridges.

HP Instant ink is a scam, avoid it at all costs. HP does not send the ink when levels run low, you have to order it yourself. The charges for exceeding expected usage are extortionate. When you realise that the costs of the contract far exceed the costs of buying toner when required and you attempt to cancel the contract HP then locks the printer so that existing cartridges cannot be used any longer - they stop you using ink that you have already paid for! Outrageous behaviour.

I enrolled with HP instant ink for 50 pages per month and as it happened didn't use anywhere near this amount or the rollover pages that I accumulated, so no additional cartridges were sent. How can HP say "you're not paying for ink you don't need" because you absolutely are paying for "pages" of ink printing that aren't being used. I agree the usage can be rolled over into following months but if you never use that rollover entitlement you are paying for not using ink. I have cancelled the subscription now so the cartridges have stopped working although they contain ink I absolutely have paid for. Outrageous!!

Many page plans are available to suit any level of printing, so your page plan can be adjusted as your printing needs change. If you cancel, the Instant Ink cartridges will stop working at the end of your final billing cycle, and you will be billed for your final payment. At that time, you can insert store-bought HP cartridges from your preferred retailer in order to keep printing. The printer itself is unaffected by the subscription cancellation but, if still installed, the Instant Ink subscription cartridges will not function. The subscription charges you for every printed page even if there's a dot on the page and not fully printed. 2 months ago I complained they had over charged me for 30% of pages that were unusable. I paid £30 in may. I normally pay under £10. They made me clean the cartridge and said it was that. They credited me a month free. Today I printed 45 pages. Of which 17 were half printed pages and unusable. They charged me for 100 pages. They tried to blame my printer being offline for 4 days when i absolutely didn't print anything on those days and another time in May when I was out of the country! Customer service dont listen , do not address the issue and were extremely unhelpful bordering on rude. I cancelled. Cheaper to get my own ink and paper than paying for blanks. I responded to their message below requesting more information and 2 weeks later they haven't responded adding to their poor customer service.

This is a comletely automated system. My printer was showing an error message on my PC but on the App wasnt showing any issues. Very hard to find out who to talk to.

I strongly regret signing up for HP Instant Ink. I canceled my subscription because I had accumulated a large supply of unopened Instant Ink cartridges that HP had already sent me while I was paying my monthly subscription. My plan was simply to pause my subscription and use the cartridges I had already paid for before deciding whether to enroll again. Instead, I discovered that once I canceled my subscription, HP remotely deactivated every Instant Ink cartridge I owned, including the full cartridges that had been sent to me during my paid membership. I now have a stockpile of perfectly good ink cartridges that are completely unusable. To make matters worse, I purchases an approved black ink cartridge and now my printer won’t even let me print a simple black-and-white document because the color Instant Ink cartridges are no longer considered “approved.” I now can't print anything (even in black and white) until I purchase a full set of colored cartridges and install them. I have to throw away perfectly full cartridges and purchase an entirely new set of retail cartridges just to use a printer I already own. The subscription model was not made clear to me when I enrolled. I thought I was paying for ink, but in reality I was paying for temporary access to subscription cartridges that HP can deactivate when you cancel. As a customer, it feels incredibly wasteful and frustrating to be left with cartridges I paid for but am no longer allowed to use. I won’t be using HP Instant Ink again, and I would encourage anyone considering the program to understand exactly how it works before signing up.
