I’d rate this company less stars if I could
I only used their free month that I received from our breeder, was never able to access my account, and customer service told me I needed a new email address, and always had some excuse. They assured me I would have “no trouble with any claims” but couldn’t even get me access to my own account, but I’m supposed to trust them. Absolutely terrible customer service

I’ve been with Trupanion for well over 10 years and 2 dogs. Both puppies have endured multiple GI breed related issues and not once has your company denied a covered expense. Submitting an invoice is seamless and reimbursement blessedly quick. I came very close to cancellation, thinking I could just save the monthly payment for any sudden expenses. Then I received my first invoice for ultrasound and in depth bloodwork for $1500. I offered up thanks for being able to receive 90% back during these unstable times. Trupanion dismissive of customers
I’ve been with this pet insurance company for over two years, and the past two months have been the worst customer experience I’ve ever had. After my employer changed paydays to the 1st and 15th, I called well in advance to move my billing date to the 15th. They told me it was updated — but it never was.
Their failure to apply a simple change threw off my entire budget. I ended up late on my car loan, late on my car insurance, and lived on peanut butter sandwiches for five days just to get through the week. Not once did anyone apologize or take responsibility.
Today, a senior staff member called me and said she was “sorry if that’s how I felt.” That’s not an apology — that’s gaslighting. After two years of loyalty and over $500 per month for four dogs, that was the final straw. I cancelled my policy two hours later.
I’ve now switched to Costco Pet Insurance for under $200 per month. Better service, better pricing, and no dismissive attitudes. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Misled and inconvenienced
Upon signing up for the plan I was told that I would only have to pay the deductible and the insurance would take care of the rest. My first time that I used the plan i had to wait at the vet for an hour after treatment to get approval only to find out that the insurance was not even going to pay 1/2 of the invoice. Very disappointed and misled. Considering cancelling plan if it fails to deliver.
Avoid these people.
I purchased Trupanion because I wanted peace of mind in case my dog ever had an emergency. Unfortunately, my first claim was extremely disappointing.
My 1-year-old Goldendoodle had a suspected foxtail in his nose and required an emergency veterinary visit. The total bill was approximately $960. Despite paying $127 per month in premiums, Trupanion reimbursed only about $100.
I later learned that my policy has a $500 per-condition deductible, and that exam fees and some medications were not covered. While these terms may be in the policy, I did not appreciate how little financial help I would actually receive for a real emergency.
As a result, I had to pay roughly $800 out of pocket, despite having insurance. This experience made me question the value of paying over $1,500 per year in premiums.
My advice to anyone considering Trupanion is to read the policy carefully, especially the deductible structure and what is excluded. Make sure you understand exactly what will and will not be reimbursed before you assume you're financially protected.

My dog injured his CCL at the Dog Park. Because it was an injury Trupanion agreed to cover this condition. They approved my coverage and I met my deductible. Then when I dropped my dog off at the vet to get his surgery almost a month later, they sent me an email as I dropped him off, saying that they were not going to cover this condition and that is considered a disease and not an injury so therefore it is pre-existing and he would not be covered. As he was outside of the coverage window for illness. His doctor knew this was an injury. We knew this was an injury, he had absolutely no signs of mobility issues whatsoever before this. He injured it while playing at the park. I find it very shady to try to say that every CCL tear is 100% a disease and not an injury. That’s absolutely not factual and it’s very shady behavior. While they finally agreed to cover the one surgery, I had dropped him off for, all of this took so long that he has since torn the other leg and also needs surgery on that one as well. Now, I am looking at not being able to help my dog on his other leg, all because it was told to us that it would be covered, and then told that it was not covered. All because Trupanion has decided that CCL tears are always a disease, no matter what. I am absolutely disgusted with this. I would never recommend this company to anyone based on this experience. Before this, I would recommend your opinion to anyone, and had been recommending Trupanion. I have since changed my stance.
I have had this insurance since I adopted my Boston Terrier eight years ago and Trupanion has been fantastic. Quick response on claims and very helpful with major medical issues.

Our 5 year old Labradoodle suffered a…
Our 5 year old Labradoodle suffered a dog bite. The bite was severe that our local Vet referred to a Veterinary Hospital to a wound specialist. Trupanion was there for us and Hendrix. The claim estimates were submitted and prompt response and approval was given. This was very beneficial to treat our Hendrix and for the specialist to minimize the pain. Highly recommended Trupanion for your Pet Insurance Provider. They were there when our Hendrix and us needed them. Veterinarian and Specialist was impressed with Trupanion as well.

A snake bite would have killed a hero
Our dog Abraham was bitten by a venomous snake. He’s a certified therapy dog who supports first responders and others overcoming trauma or illness and he’s truly become a hero to many whose lives he’s helped save. I brought him to a hospital connected to Trupanion's and used our insurance. I could focus on saving his life rather than cost. Then the hospital thought his leg needed to be amputated, but told us about another specialty clinic named Fetch in Greeneville, NC with equipment and experts that could save his leg, they were also in the Trupanion network. For three months Abraham underwent extensive surgeries, cast changes, testing and follow up and the compassion and support that Fetch and Trupanion provided in partnership to save this special hero was incredible. We had firefighters who Abraham had helped when they were recovering from the traumatic events, reaching out to support him. He survived, and his leg was saved and he’ll have a full recovery. Soon he’ll be returning full time to help save others lives. We never could have done that without Trupanion and the doctors and vets they partner with at Fetch.

I cannot say enough about Trupanion. I have had it for seven years and never used it. I thought of cancelling it but decided against it. My dog Lola had gotten into something poisonous and I took her to the Guilford Animal Hospital The staff after learning I had Trupanion did all the paperwork. After a three day stay the bill was complete. Trupanion paid everything without question except for my responsibilities which I was informed of at the beginning. This happened again 4 weeks later we observed her chewing on a poisonous mugwort plant and again had to bring her to Vet Hospital. Trupanion again paid the claim without question. This is a solid company that I recommend highly if you are a pet owner. I was so pleased with my experience that I added my other dog to the plan.
