Great support, 2 years and counting

I have been using DreamHost for almost 2 years now, overall experience has been good. Took their 3 year hosting plan, no major issues till now. I am not very technical so sometimes I get confused with settings and backend stuff, but their live chat support usually helps me sort it out without much wait. Pricing is decent for what you get, though I wish some things were a bit simpler to understand on my own. Been sticking with them for 2 years so that says something.

RESOLVED: Wordpress Plugin auto-update not working

I had a problem with our Wordpress plugins not updating automatically as they were set to. The alert used some techno language I didn't understand, so I reached out to Dreamhost, my webhost provider for help. Yesid with Dreamhost promptly identified and solved the issue and now automatic updates are working properly. I'm very please with this support, and the multiple different support sessions with Dreamhost support folks!

I strongly recommend avoiding…

I strongly recommend avoiding DreamHost. My VPS has suffered repeated stability issues despite having very low-traffic sites and using Cloudflare on all sites. DreamHost’s explanation does not match the reality of our setup, and the service has not delivered the reliability expected from a managed VPS. The support responses have felt generic and unhelpful, with little practical value and no proper resolution. If you run business-critical websites, I would look elsewhere. In my experience, this has been frustrating, costly, and far below the standard promised

Dreamhost tech support is the best

Dreamhost tech support is the best. Other webhosting companies won't let you talk to a real person before forcing you through the AI guantlet, and may take hours to respond. Dreamhost gives you the option of text or email and responds within half an hour. And for affordability, it's hard to beat. That said, you do have to know what you're doing. There's not a lot of hand-holding. Honesty compels me to admit that I was prompted by the friendly guy who solved my problem to post this review. However, I had already been thinking I should review them somewhere when his email arrived. So rest assured this is my genuine opinion! And I am a real person, albeit one increasingly wondering why I do all this when most of my website's visitors are bots...

Stay far away from their AI website builder (remixer)

I signed up with them over a month ago. It has been nothing but issues and excuses from day one. Their new AI model is the worst I’ve dealt with by a huge margin. The worst part of the entire experience is that they charge you per use via AI credits to build out your website that they are hosting. You ask it to complete a task, it will fail, then they deduct from your credit balance. You try again, same result. After 4-5 attempts, you have to contact CS which is all done through chat and they put in a ticket which is never resolved. I currently have several large glitches/bugs in my site that no one there can figure out how to fix. My preview hasn’t worked since almost the first day. Etc etc…..They rushed the AI website builder to market and are charging us the customers to do their R&D for them. It is absolutely absurd. Stay far away, you have been warned!

Hey there, Jeremiah! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We understand how frustrating it can be to encounter preview issues and credit usage concerns while attempting to set up your site with Remixer. While AI actions draw on credits to process design updates and site generations, we want to ensure any technical glitches with your project or outstanding support tickets are thoroughly reviewed and resolved. At this time, we weren’t able to locate your account based on the information provided in this review. We’ve sent a request through Trustpilot for additional details so we can identify the account and review your case more closely. Once we have that information, we’ll be happy to follow up and guide you on the next steps toward resolution. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and look forward to assisting further. Dreamhost started out awesome but has turned evil

Dreamhost started as a very awesome company. I signed up for a VPS around 2008 and things were fairly smooth for many years. Support was (¡past tense!) first rate. At some point, they started noticeably changing for the worse. They did everything they could to get me to move to a different plan. They would force-upgrade PHP versions which forced me to refactor codebases and upgrade other packages which would break my sites. Then, they told me they would no longer allow me to keep the plan I had and forced me to pay extra to keep the last version of PHP they wanted me to stay on. Keep in mind, these are all virtualized instances. The whole time, I ran very low bandwidth and very low demand services. It cost them very little to keep me on. I soon after changed careers and had no need for most of the stuff I had on there but did not want to lose anything. So I kept paying. What was critical to me, however, was the custom domain email I had hosted with them. This past spring, I suffered some financial hits and fell behind on some payments. Dreamhost included. They did alert me my data was at risk of being lost. A couple of months behind, I finally paid the outstanding bill. All my email was gone. They didn't even tell me it had happened. They had no idea what had happened. I discovered it simply by launching my email client, which synced with their SMTP service… and… promptly deleted EVERY SINGLE EMAIL I had stored in that account all the way back to before 2010!!! I contacted support and they said there was nothing they could do. How does a major hosting company not retain backups of everything in case something bad happens? How does a major hosting company not wait at least 6 or 12 months… and not provide several clear warnings about a deletion date, including a 7 day and 24 hour warning… and exact itemization of what would be deleted (MySQL data… VPS files… email…) on the specific date? It's honestly mind-boggling. I could even understand them saying "look, we have a data restoration policy if your account lapses and you have to pay a support fee to restore some types of data" Nothing of the sort. Fake sympathy oozed from their support person. Fake passive aggressive apologies. A shrug off. Oh well, sucks for you! But we're upbeat happy support people and we wish you all the best!! And the whole time they were getting paid handsomely to provide nothing but some modest storage space, basically. No servers were being hit. No websites were operational. No MySQL databases were being queried. This company has become rotten to the core. No one there actually gives a crap about their customers. Decades of being a loyal customer? Whatever. I gave them referrals and always said they were great. Whatever. They don't care. Stay away from this company! At least other hosting providers don't pretend to be wholesome and friendly. At least other hosting providers provide clean GUIs and clear terms and guidelines; clear emails with clear cut off deadlines and clear consequences. Truly a miserable experience.

Hey there, Chris! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Having been with us since 2008, we truly value the long relationship you’ve had with DreamHost, and we’re very sorry to hear about the frustration this situation caused. We understand how important stored emails and website files are. To help prevent data loss, our systems send multiple notifications and payment reminders, and we provide a 60-day grace period before an account is suspended for an unpaid balance. Once an account remains past due beyond this timeframe, associated hosting data and emails are permanently removed from our active systems and backups, as mentioned on the emails we sent, as well as on our Terms of Service. At this time, we weren’t able to locate your account based on the information provided in this review. We’ve sent a request through Trustpilot for additional details so we can identify the account and review your case more closely. Once we have that information, we’ll be happy to follow up with you. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and look forward to assisting further. Best regards, AA

One star is far more than they deserve

Dreamhost is by far the very worst company I have ever worked with any capacity. I was with them for years and referred multiple customers to them. One day, they emailed me out of the blue that they're terminating my account. They also immediately took my main website offline without warning. Despite asking, they never gave me an explanation, and refused to put it back online for even a few minutes so that I can migrate it to another server. This caused me significant downtime. My website had previously ranked #1 on Google. I lost that position because of them. Again, they couldn't even be bothered to EXPLAIN themselves. They literally wrote me verbatim "We do not need to provide any explanation as to why we terminated your account." Some time has passed, I just reached out to them again to discuss this, and they couldn't even be bothered to dignify me with a response. Despicable way to treat a long time loyal customer. Shame on you Dreamhost.

Above and beyond

A third party registrar suspended my domain, and gave me no options to communicate with them. I thought my domain was lost. But Freddieraida took charge and advocated for me, going above and beyond to get the domain back. Thank you Freddieraida, for your excellent customer service. You are what makes DreamHost great.

Very prompt response

Very prompt response although it probably would have been better if the original E-mail had contained the information I needed so I didn't have to inquire about it but, overall, I got the information I needed very promptly and that's the important thing.

I definitely recommend dreamhost.

I have been with Dreamhost for almost 30 years, on and off. I've had dedicated servers and I've been on a shared serving downtime is virtually zero. Communication is very good and the price is very competitive if ever I've had a problem in the past, I've submitted a ticket to their admin and they've sorted it out very quickly. I definitely recommend dreamhost.

After 20yrs with DH ...

I've been with DH since ?what? 2006 or so ... 20years? I've had many domains, deployed many tools (Wiki and WP and others) but a lot less recently. So when I launched a new domain (mind-brain.org) I realized that I had forgotten a lot of details! So, along with longish explanations (which actually were surplus) Tech Support walked me to simple answers for my lame brained questions, graciousl! good stuff :-) --ben
