Consumers frequently appreciate the attractive design, sturdy construction, and the wonderfully relaxing sounds of trickling water that enhance their living space. Some reviewers were not happy with unexpected monthly subscription costs required to keep the smart devices fully operational. Furthermore, a few people mentioned experiencing hardware failures, pump issues, and disappointingly low seed germination rates after a few months of use.

What people say

Great concept horrible business…

Great concept horrible business practices! My unit needed to be replaced because the pump didn’t work. The camera didn’t work. The light didn’t work and the plants were not growing because they were not getting water. Now they want to charge me for the return on the other unit which I cannot get in the box, then I read that they use refurbished parts and those to replace their broken parts on their original unit. I guess that’s why they’re so insistent that I try to return this old one that I can’t even fit in the box and they’ve threatened to charge me for both lots of luck with that.

Disabled Product; Abysmal Support

Garydn is selling "subtractively licensed" (read: "partially disabled") products. You pay $700 for an indoor hydroponic garden, and find out after you purchase it that you've got to pay them every month indefinitely in order to have any indication of low water levels. It's just lights and a water pump with a couple of timers, people. There's literally no reason for this to be online. It would've been simple enough to just put a float indicator on this unit, because I walk past it multiple times a day in my house, but they're not interested in a functional product. They're only interested in turning a profit off of this poor excuse for a turnkey hydroponic solution. Add to that: mine simply stopped working one day, and although they initially sent me an email that a replacement lid would be shipped within 10 days, I found out later that below that notification in the same email, they were requesting me to respond to confirm I understood they planned to ship me a used replacement lid. Skip forward to where I went back to find out why I hadn't gotten a shipment notification like they said I would, and I finally noticed they were waiting for me to respond... so I responded and asked them to please ship the lid as they indicated. And now they're asking me to do the troubleshooting steps over again, as if anything would've magically been fixed by sitting there for 10+ days. I think it is probably simpler, more effective (and *far* cheaper) to just build my own automatic indoor garden with a shelving unit, an aquarium pump, and a bucket of water. The plants are dead, folks(oh, by the way, there's a way to manually water the plants, but it's too late for that now).

Broken Produce, No Customer Service, Dead Plants

Hands down the worst consumer experience I’ve had in the last decade. The product broke. Customer service was nowhere to be found. After hours of time and months of higher electricity bills the plants died. And the company wasn’t willing to stand behind its product or its service. Buyer beware.

Bad customer service. (They use bots)

Attempted to purchase the Gardyn system, had an unknown error in processing the payment using amazon. Waited a few days to get the process to go through. Unfortunately I must have made a mistake and didn't finish the payment steps and therefore didn't purchase the item in time to use the discount code. I tried to reach out to their customer service team expecting a person, and got stuck with a bot named Anton. The service was non existent, they didn't make any attempt to ask me what the errors were, they just said “unfortunately the discount code is now expired”. This is why I say bot because I really don’t believe it was a person on the other end. Completely non helpful, really unresponsive, and quite terrible unfriendly and non personal customer service- which is not what I was expecting. Due to this I am no longer purchasing a system, which is honestly disappointing. After the customer service experience I really feel like I dodged a bullet and will be going with a different hydroponics company.

Don't bother

Don't bother. Their 24 hour text support is none existent. I even volunteered to help them out because Vivian said they are short staffed. Its sad because they could be making a lot of customers happy but tech support, well there is just one person.... apparently. I'll let you know if they let me on board....

Very poor customer service

I brought the system last Oct (2022) and set it up a few weeks ago. I went to sign into my membership (which I paid for 2 years) & apparently they are having issues with it. Now that system and the membership is about 2000.00 and I can't do anything till they fix the issue. One dept is blaming the order dept, they say it's a IT issue. I the mean time, I paid for something that is basically useless to me.

Lack of support with technical issues

Lack of support with technical issues. Their only support is via email and each exchange takes 24 hours. I've had the unit for 2 weeks and still am not able to connect to wifi, which is necessary for full functionality. Don't waste your time.

Purchased my gardyn in December 2022…

Purchased my gardyn in December 2022 and it is the beginning of August 2023 and my gardyn system is not working. First off, the pump was previously giving me issues not long after I got it and making loud noises at times. Now, the darn thing will not turn on. I tried pressing the button and nothing. I tried the switch in the back. I tried unplugging and plugging back in and nothing. The power cord is green and still on, but the device is not. The water level system is a complete joke alongside the app. Many plants I will never re-order because they're way too small and a waste of time to grow, especially the mini strawberries. They aren't mini, they're just plain tiny and not very sweet. I did enjoy growing the purple kohlrabi. However, the time, electricity, water, effort, and cost doesn't add up for something I can only grow once.

Great Idea, Cool Design, But Dies after 6-9 months

I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a device at this price point to be able to run for 2-5 years before breaking down. I purchased 3 Gardyns, and in the span of one year, have had to replace every single lid once, sometimes twice. Not one of them lasted more than 6-9 months before some sort of major breakdown. Either the pump stopped working, the electrical system shorted out, it would constantly lose connection with wifi, or the sphaghetti tubing inside the column cracked and leaked. Kudos to the Gardyn support team, as they shipped me 4 replacement lids at no cost over the last year. Unfortunately, all the plants died by the time each replacement lid showed up. In short, great idea, cool design, but doesn't last long before breaking down. Once your original 1 year warranty is up, you have to pay $190 a pop to replace the lids. I can't recommend these units unless you enjoy constantly replacing the lids.

Terrible ROI- expect to pay for replacement parts every 1-2 years

Loved my Gardyn so much that I purchased a second one not long after. Both worked great for a little while but now both have died on me. Definitely NOT a good return on investment at all. Both motors stopped working and both have corroded where they need the lid (I have both the 1.0 and 2.0, but my 1.0 is older and lasted longer). I had reached out to Gardyn when the first one failed and was offered a discount on a new lid, which I just purchased. While I’m waiting for that to arrive, my second motor just died on me (again corrosion where the motor meets the lid) after just under a year and a half of use. At this point, I’m hesitant to put any more money into these units. I wouldn’t recommend unless you are ok with replacing the motor and lid every 1-2 years.

NOT AS ADVERTISED

I have used the Gardyn exactly as instructed. Paid for Kelby subscription. Boost and food cost 75.00 per month. The unit grows algae like crazy. The plants remain so small that you cant feed one person never mind a family of four. The labor involved is entirely disproportionate to the meager yield. On top of that, the lights are obnoxious. I tried to return but am outside the 60 days so received a flat “no.” MAJOR WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME.

MOLDY AND DRIED OUT

The product is horrible. More than half of my pods molded over! The plants do not grow and the light burns the ones that do! We have had it for 5 months, been taking great care of it and despite weekly trimming of dead leaves and flowers that sprout I haven’t even been able to yield a single edible plant. Even the lettuce is bitter. Customer service is terrible. I have no been able to get in contact with anyone. For 700$ You would think the device would work. Please do not waste your money on this. If it goes wrong you won’t be able to get any help from customer service. Not worth the purchase

On 05/04/23 I purchased a Gardyn 3.0…

On 05/04/23 I purchased a Gardyn 3.0 system for $864.92. I have been in contact with the company about my missing order and I have yet to receive it. They do not reply to emails as well. I will not recommend this company for bad customer service. I prefer how Aerogarden treats its customers and replies when I've encountered issues with my hydroponic gardens. It has been almost two months and I am without my purchase for order # D4140249066.

Horrible all around experience

Well, I think it could be a five-star experience with this company except there is a total lack of follow through and extremely overpriced, well... everything. I've paid for a membership where there was supposed to be plant support specialists to answer my questions, except they didn't respond to them, so I still have questions about dying plants, etc. Very poorly made info videos, useless just about. They charge insane amounts of money for services they don't provide and products that could be a 10th of the price. Do yourself a favor and go with literally any other company out there for your growing needs. I regret this purchase so so much!!!

Gardyn 2.0...it's broken, again...

I'm a Gardyn 2.0 owner and I've had 3 pumps fail in my 2 years of ownership--on my second lid replacement and I can confirm this practice of offering customers discounts on new lids post expiration of warranty. I'm going to try installing a small pump and place it on a Meross smart plug/GFI. Maybe it saves my investment / crops while we look for some better executed solutions Update: The alternate approach worked...don't buy the 2.0 version if you can avoid it!

loved gardyn it until recently.

We have had our gardyn since 2020 and have been extremely satisfied with it until recently. The water pump and wiring have failed in the past and customer service has been quick to fix the problem by offering replacement parts. However, when the gardyn stopped working this time, the only option we were given was to purchase a refurbished lid for nearly $200. This refurbished lid would have a one year warranty. This is extremely frustrating because the likelihood of it breaking after the year is very high and we would be left with the same problem again. Our question is has there been a design change to the 2.0 lid that would prevent this from happening again? The gardyn 2.0 lid has some obvious design flaws with all parts underneath the lid (pump malfuntion, sensors corroded, wiring corroded). We have been members since we purchased it (which is $745 for 2 years) and are now having to decide if we just want to throw in the towel and given up on gardyn or dish out some more money on a lid/pump/wiring that is likely to fail again. Hopefully their new product the 3.0 has fixed this problem and the folks buying it won't have to deal with it. We are truly upset about this because we have loved our garydn and have raved about the customer service up until now.

Failed connection to the pump

After a regular monthly tank refresh the pump wouldnt start. I kept connecting and reconnecting, trying to figure out if it was a WiFi or an app issue or something as such. Few days later I wrote to customer support and replied with the pictures requested, Ofcourse it was by then a week after my one year warranty had expired. Now I need to replace the whole lid and all I get is some discout they are offering. As far as I am concerned this is a very expensive piece of equipment that should not fail within the first year of use. I tried to post the problem on the facebook group and the post was declined by the administrators. If the group is just for members to post the positive experiences, it does not serve the purpose. I wish I had access to more reviews and a truthful picture of hydroponic farming before buying this. I live in a food desert and thought this will be an answer for lack of fresh greens, but I will be eating very expensive lettuce salads if I have to keep replacing the lid every year. Update 3/2/23 After this review, Gardyn wanted me to contact them to schedule a phone call. When I emailed the support team, they closed the new ticket and merged with the old ticket, but never gave me a call back. Very poor quality product for a high price and very poor customer service

I am on my third Gardyn and it is broken

I am on my third Gardyn. The third is the refurbished portion of the machine, the lid, that controls the water, light, motor, internet connection and anything else this machine needs. The other two I purchased. This third unit will not stay connected to my internet even after multiple modem resets, Gardyn reconnections, emailing back and forth with their support staff. I even purchased a Wi-Fi extender to help the signal. Everything on my end is fine except the Gardyn itself. The other TWO gardyns I had there was no issue staying connected to the internet. Gardyn staff are telling me over and over my signal is weak. The first Gardyn died and I’m not sure why but I believe some connections became corroded. The second one I believe had corrosion issues as well and the machine would not read the water level correctly. When the water level is incorrect i don’t know how much water is in there and the machine has run dry at times. That is happening with this third one as well because of the supposed connection issue. I have this expensive system and all 3/3 systems have failed me. I am beyond frustrated and I need this company to help or even replace it again. Addition to Gardyns reply. I do not have 3 Gardyns. I said I’m on my third as the first two already broke.

Water sensor failures, poor design

3rd lid. Water sensor is a POS and is not replaceable, requires replacement of entire lid. Usually fails after 13 months once warranty expires. Edit 1/2. They called me today and offered to make it right with either a refurbished lid or a discount on the Gardyn 3.0. The customer service was excellent albeit it a bit reactionary to the review, nevertheless I am satisfied. My advice is not to buy the Gardyn 1.0, several items have been upgraded since that time that will likely fail on you. Go for the new one.
