Reviewers overwhelmingly had a great experience with this company. Customers frequently praise the friendly and supportive staff who patiently guide first-time authors through every single step of the entire publishing journey. Many people also appreciate the exceptional print quality, vibrant colors, and gorgeous professional book designs that consistently exceed their initial expectations. However, some reviewers were not happy with publishing errors, unexpected formatting issues, and frustrating communication delays that occurred after making their initial purchases. A few other people also felt that the editing services and the strict proofing process could be significantly improved for better results.

i had several questions during the production process, and the people i spoke with were responsive and helpful.
As a first-time author in my early 70s, I knew very little about the publishing process when I completed my memoir. BookBaby guided me through every step with professionalism, patience, and clear communication. Their emails were timely and informative, with excellent follow-up throughout the proofreading and formatting process—all at a very reasonable price. The finished book exceeded my expectations. The cover and printing quality are excellent, and my first shipment of 60 books arrived on my front porch within days of final approval! BookBaby made what initially felt overwhelming both manageable and exciting. I am very happy I chose BookBaby to help bring my story to life, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to other first-time authors.
I’m very happy with Book Baby. They presented a fantastic manuscript layout, and the cover is unbelievable. Hats off to the design team.I never could’ve figured that out myself. They’ve always been helpful every time I phoned them. I tend to phone a lot because I have questions.
The team was very responsive and had great customer service skills. It was nice to be able to speak with actual people. They were very helpful and understanding. The icing on the cake was the books look great.
Bookbaby isn’t at all what I expected. Their customer service after publication is HORRIBLE! The staff is very short and completely useless.i will go as far as say that they were very rude. They don’t even deserve a star. Printing was horrible. They aren’t even equipped with the latest to upgrade pics or the consistency of printing each book with the same quality. It’s almost like they ran out of ink and still kept printing . Definitely would not recommend.
Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your experience. I see you have been in touch with our support team via email today in regards to updating your metadata on Amazon. I am not seeing any previous correspondence from you regarding concerns with manufacturing on the orders we printed in 12/25 or 2/26. I will have somebody reach out to you directly for more information.
BookBaby made my first book project a smooth and enjoyable experience. They were with me every step of the way, and I was especially impressed by how quickly everything came together, from receiving the digital proof to having the printed books delivered to my doorstep. I would highly recommend BookBaby to anyone looking to bring a book project to life.
Excellent service and very good quality of book printing and production.
I liked the responsiveness. I liked the early part of the process. I am very unhappy about the three weeks of back-and-forth about the hold on my project because of resolution problems. I got responses with no clear explanation. If I replied with "do I understand that _____ " the response either ignored the question or gave a puzzling answer. Now I am waiting to hear when I can expect to receive my books. I understand that production is about to begin, but that is rather vague. Three stars is the best I can do.
Great customer service. Went above my expectations.
From the start of the process to the delivery of the books on my doorstep, this has been an enjoyable experience. The customer service was outstanding and the staff's expertise and experience was invaluable. And the final product, beautiful quality on the interior and exterior. I could not be more pleased with the value for what was paid for such a beautiful product. Simply put, BookBaby delivered far above what I expected and have another loyal customer.
As a first time author I had no idea of the complexity of publishing my book. My editor turned me on to Book Baby. They did a great job and kept to the timeline they state upfront. The finish product was fantastic. Thank you for making my dream a reality.
I gave it a 2 star it would have been a 1 star if it wasn't for them answering the phone. As far as a publishing company that I give a 1 star for a few reasons. I couldn't even get into the book because I was too busy correcting the errors from their publish. When I called to let them know the situation they wanted to blame the writer for it all. Maybe I got it wrong but I was under the impression of publisher is somebody that proofreads retypes re put together Prince and book bonds it. The book I read was interesting if it wasn't for those errors I would have been able to get into it better. It sucks because I even let them know and they just pushed it off like it was nothing the lady was even eating while she was on the phone with me. It seems like a company that was ran out of her living room not out of a real business. Go ahead and reply if anybody else has had the same issue with them. Book baby publisher I wouldn't do that twice.!
Hello Sabrina. The number you included with the review isn't valid, but I believe I have located the order you made with us in May 2025, for a book from our BookBaby Bookshop retail site. We are sorry if errors in the book interfered with your reading experience and apologize if your phone interaction with our representative felt dismissive. That is not the experience we want anyone to have when contacting BookBaby. BookBaby is a self-publishing platform that allows independent authors to select the specific services they need. These services may include editing, cover design, interior formatting, printing, and distribution, but authors are not required to purchase every service. The author of the book you purchased did not select BookBaby’s editing or proofreading services. When editing is not purchased, the author remains responsible for the accuracy of the manuscript, and the book is printed from the files the author reviews and approves. BookBaby does not rewrite, proofread, or change an author’s content unless the author specifically hires us to perform that work. We understand that readers may reasonably associate the company named in a book with every part of its production, so we appreciate the opportunity to explain the distinction. While we cannot take responsibility for manuscript errors we were not hired to correct, we take your comments about the customer-service interaction seriously and will address them internally.
I tried to buy my recently published book! I paid without to see an Order number. Then I stepped to Download Order and had to fill in the order number. I hadn’t such a number !
Hello, I apologize for any confusion. When you log in to your BookBaby Bookshop account, it opens on the ORDERS screen. That lists all eBooks that you purchased, along with the date of the purchase and the title of the book. There would be no need to input an order number to be able to download the book from your account.
Subject: Request for Corrected Reprint of My Memoir – Paid for Professional Editing Dear Team, Does anybody care anymore? Does anybody have moral empathy anymore? This is my personal memoir, and it means everything to me. I put my heart into these pages, and seeing it printed full of mistakes has hurt me deeply—like something precious was mishandled and broken. Many people have been waiting for this book’s release, and I am embarrassed to share it in its current state. Once you received my payment, my concerns stopped being taken seriously. I’ve reached out to Collene by email just as she requested, and to others, yet I keep getting redirected from one person to another without ever reaching anyone who can actually fix this. Now I’ve talked to Linda and Jackie, and they’re telling me to talk to Morgan. I paid $5,000 dollars—you would think that is being proofread. You spend that kind of money? I was so heartsick I couldn’t sleep for a week after waiting so long for this book. I do not want a refund. I want the editing and proofreading I paid for, followed by a corrected reprint of the book at no additional cost to me. This book deserves to be right, and so do I. Sincerely, Mary Justice
My first time with your company and definitely will not be my last! Nicky was excellent with her expeditious and incredible personal service in assisting me with my purchase. I'm praying that your delivery experience on the 22nd will compliment my purchase experience! Looking forward to spending in the future with your store! Very Satisfied Customer, Dennie Todd
The cost of this edit was grossly over-expensive and I would not use Book Baby again given the cost. As I went about making the suggested edits I came across 25-30+ missed edits that were obvious. The editor had the most minimal involvement in this process possible and took the maximum time. I could have run this manuscript through ChatGPT and got the same results. Not satisfied at all. I have used this service before and got excellent result, which is why I had submitted my manuscript this time around. I will search around more carefully for options next time. Getting feedback by phone was a complete and useless effort. And on occasion was offensive from my standpoint. And upfront, let me say that your brochure is nothing more than "switch and bait" misrepresenting editing times as 7-9 days (with no mention of work days here or length of manuscript)--come on you can do better. I know because I have seen it before.
Hello Gary. I'm sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with the quality of work that our editors did on your manuscript. We had offered you a second pass of editing which you had declined, so we have already processed a partial refund to your credit card.
Creating a book can be daunting. Experiencing the customer support and seeing the finished product, led us to self publish with BookBaby. The fact that one can actually talk to someone and get feedback was invaluable. Sierra Edwards, Senior Book Publishing Specialist, was able to navigate us through all aspects of the project, from coupon discounts to setting up tax forms. As people look at the quality of the paper and the high resolution photos, they actually touch the paper and smile. The visual experience draws the reader in to fully experience the words; it adds to the narrative. Sharing the Stoke, Surfing's Global Legacy is the inspiration for the exhibit at Mystic Seaport Museum opening Memorial Day weekend 2027. The book will also be sold at the museum, but it is being used to promote the exhibition - a quality product was an absolute necessity.
Overall, it was great. There were moments during the formatting process that additional explanation and assistance would have been helpful. Everyone was very kind and quick to respond, but it felt like I could’ve used more hands on explanation without paying the $99 fee for it.
