Affordable VPS, but unreliable for production websites
I have used RackNerd unmanaged VPS services for over one year in the past and again for more than three months recently. During this time, I have experienced unexpected outages and periods of slowness. While some issues I raised were resolved, others remained unresolved.
Starting on 15th December 2025, my website began going offline unexpectedly. Before this date, the same setup had been running without issues. After the outages started, I often had to manually restart the server from the RackNerd control panel to restore service.
When I contacted support, I was informed several times that software-related issues are not supported. I explained that the configuration had been stable before 15th December and that the issues only started afterward. However, the responses remained largely the same, and the situation was not fully investigated from my perspective.
In terms of performance:
I previously used a 4-core, 3GB RAM VPS on Ubuntu, where the control panel alone could reach 100% resource usage.
I later switched to AlmaLinux, which is generally considered lighter than Ubuntu.
On a 2-core, 2GB RAM VPS with AlmaLinux, I am still experiencing high resource usage with minimal activity.
(New Update)
After reinstalling AlmaLinux as suggested by support, the issue continues, and I am now also experiencing unexpected SSH disconnections.
Based on my experience, I found the service unstable for hosting live websites that require consistent uptime.
⭐ I will give three stars for affordability and for those people/developers who are testing websites.

Hi Martin -- Thank You for allowing us the opportunity to be your provider for over a year. I'm sorry to hear that your experience wasn't what it should be. RackNerd is an Inc. 5000 company, recognized for excellence multiple years in a row, and we serve everyone from hobbyists to startups to enterprise companies. We're quite known for providing services that grant performance at all times, which is how we've built our reputation in this industry.
In regards to your website going offline and requiring manual restarts, this does sound like a software-related issue within your environment, as our nodes themselves remain online and operational. If the node or virtualization layer were experiencing issues, you wouldn't be able to simply restart your VM to restore service -- the problem would persist regardless. The fact that a restart resolves it temporarily, points to something within your VPS configuration or the software stack you're running.
It's also important to note that our KVM VPS by default are unmanaged, and we do not maintain client environments. When connectivity or performance issues are isolated to a single VM (while the node and other VMs remain stable), this typically indicates a configuration issue within that specific software stack or environment. Without access to your VM or details about what's running, there's limited troubleshooting that can be done from our end beyond confirming node health and network connectivity.
100% resource usage with just a control panel running suggests something within your software stack may be misconfigured or resource-intensive. To help point you towards the right direction, you may consider using the "top -c" command in SSH, to identify which process is using the most CPU. Or download/run "htop" for a more detailed overview. The "ps aux" command is useful too, to get a full picture understanding of all the processes running in your server. Our nodes are not oversold, and customers routinely run production workloads without these symptoms, so identifying what's consuming your resources should help narrow this down.
If you'd like to discuss further, feel free to reach out to bizdev[@]racknerd[.]com and we can go from there -- happy to offer more guidance or point you in the right direction if you're still stuck.
Racknerd is a great place to get VPS. Not only that, Anthony the customer success manager made sure everything was good on my end and ensured my inquiries were addressed and handled.
I am a machine expert, and at the same time, I am hotly evaluated. RN is the best service team I have ever encountered. It has a high response of 7x24 hours, and the work order can be replied in no more than 20 minutes at most. It is efficient in handling problems. I especially like RN's DC2 and the annual flash purchase. This year, it is a complete set of flash purchases for the Grand Slam. Thank you very much for RN's company. Here is the test data of my personal actual use. I will share it with you.
I waited more than 12 hours to get a response to a ticket.
They deleted my entire server after sending only one warning email over the weekend. All data from 300 websites was wiped without any backup reminder — just a single overdue notice sent on a weekend.
On Monday, I immediately contacted them to renew, but after waiting 12 hours, while all my sites were down the whole time, they replied saying the data couldn’t be restored. They claimed the server was deleted 3 days after expiration for security reasons.

Hi there,
I sincerely apologize for the frustration you experienced. Generally, tickets are responded to very quickly 24x7, with our average response time under 20 minutes. Though I'm assuming (from the sounds of it) this was a billing related matter, which is likely why there was a delay, as the billing department operates M-F during normal business hours. The support department though, is 24x7.
Do you have a ticket ID that we can review, so we can shed more light on this matter?
By the way, without yet knowing the specifics of your case, I will say that we're always happy to work with customers on payment extensions, though we do need to hear from you before the due date. Communication is key, and we're always happy to work with our customers as long as we're aware of your intentions.
Thank you, and we look forward to hearing back from you! Please feel free to reach out via email at: bizdev[@]racknerd[.]com with the requested information, so we can further discuss a resolution path.
Been using their service for quite a while now. Price is affordable. Support is speedy. Server never had any performance issues. Best thing is that they immediately notified me that my server was hacked. Highly recommended. 👍
$39.88 for a 100GB VPS, 4.5GB ram, 8TB bandwidth and 3 cores is one of their recent discounts and apparently they won't increase prices on renewal.
No, this is not a paid advert; honestly RACkNeRD is so amazing. As long as you buy the right resources you need for your website, it works like a charm. I bought a VPS and installed cyberpanel to run my WordPress website. Honestly, everything is working very perfectly. Most issues are related to knowledge about using VPS rather than the VPS itself.
My website has never been snapier and I pray Google improves my ranking.
Excellent VPS & Web Hosting Service – Years with them !
I’ve been using RackNerd for several years now for both my web hosting and VPS needs, and the experience has been absolutely flawless. Their uptime has been a consistent 100% — zero issues, no downtime, everything runs seamlessly.
The support team is super responsive and genuinely helpful, always resolving queries quickly and professionally. A special shoutout to Anthony Fye, an excellent Customer Success Manager who truly understands customer needs and ensures everything gets handled efficiently.
Everything about RackNerd feels well-structured, transparent, and super cool — from their hosting setup to customer communication and billing.
If you’re looking for a reliable, affordable, and performance-driven hosting provider, I highly recommend RackNerd.
I don’t usually leave reviews but I gotta say something about this. I’ve got a cPanel reseller account with Racknerd which I use for hosting client sites (I own a digital creative agency), and recently they upgraded the hardware on it for free. Didn’t even ask for it, but noticed my sites felt snappier. Ran a few tests out of curiosity and the TTFB numbers were better than any of my other hosts, including ones that cost me more. Been too lazy to migrate the few that are still hosted elsewhere but this is enough motivation for me now to be cancelling with my other provider and moving more sites here.
What I like is they didn’t try to sell it as some upsell or new plan, existing customers like me just got the bump without any extra fees. That’s rare in hosting where most companies seem to look for excuses to charge you more. Here, it feels like they’re actually investing in their platform and passing the benefits down.
For me because of the industry I am in and the type of business I have, websites loading fast is what matters most. My clients check TTFB and things like that religiously. On that front, RackNerd knocked it out of the park with these upgrades. Definitely feels like I’m getting way more value than what I’m paying
budget option - Windows Server 2016 - obviously very outdated, can't use it for a lot of API's (including Claude) but it was ok for the purposes I was using it for. That's until I was a little late on a payment and they shut down my account and deleted all of my data, without warning - so unnecessary - they could have backed it up - obviously don't care about their customers
Response to Racknerd's reply below:
Yes you sent a notice on 9/27 but the account wasn't past due until close to two weeks after that invoice was sent out - so they deleted my server at less than 2 weeks past due - anyway, I know it's their business model. I guess you get what you pay for. And this wasn't some $10/month shared server I was paying for. It was about $40/month with a bunch of applications I'd built housed on there. And obviously these weren't critical real-time applications but there was a lot of work product on there and they annihilated all of it after I was like 10 days past/due. And btw - "suspension" isn't the same as deletion. Normally those two are very different things and the window you have between the two is very short. Pretty harsh and unnecessary. So no, not at all interested in starting all over again with Racknerd or ever doing business with you again. Why would I do that? Lesson learned. Oh and btw yes, I recognize that you have Windows 2022 also, but when I looked into it, wasn't a great value.

Hi DS -- thanks for sharing your feedback. Just to clarify, with our Windows VPS product line - we fully support Windows Server 2022 (which we recommend for modern compatibility). Customers can also select Windows Server 2012, 2016, or 2022 during order — or reinstall/switch versions anytime via the SolusVM control panel. Here’s a short how-to video for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy8Q3s3uXlk
While we agree that Windows Server 2016 (and previous versions) are becoming outdated, it’s still available for those who specifically choose it, as some applications or legacy environments still rely on it. In other words, you do not have to use 2016 if you do not want to.
Regarding your billing situation, after further review of your account history, our billing system sent multiple payment reminders between September 27 and October 19, including a suspension notice on October 13 — so the claim of “no warning” isn’t accurate (in fact, you had over a dozen warnings/emails according to the email history log). The service was automatically terminated by the system once the overdue grace period elapsed, with no manual action taken by staff.
We’re always open to working with customers who reach out and communicate their needs/intentions -- communication goes a long way, and had we known you needed more time to make payment, we would have gladly extended the due date. Autopay is also optionally available by saving a card on file and setting the payment method on the service to credit card, if desired.
If you’d like to continue service with us, we’d be happy to help set up a new server and work with you personally to ensure smooth continuity moving forward.
My RackNerd review, great prices but even better support!
Been with RackNerd for about 3 years now running a few VPS instances, and I can say hands down they’ve been the most consistent provider I’ve ever used. Price and performance are great, but the biggest thing for me is their support. With other hosts I’ve tried, sometimes you’d get a fast reply, other times you’d wait forever, super inconsistent. With RackNerd it’s the complete opposite… no matter when I’ve opened a ticket, day or night, they’ve always been there with a quick, knowledgeable response. You can tell their staff actually enjoys what they do, and it shows in the way they handle customers. That’s the kind of reliability that keeps me sticking around year after year.
So after another month I have 151 tickets regarding abuse from their network (spam, phishing, viruses, server attacks)... Support is not even reading the tickets and only copy-paste some of their prepared answers...
Sample:
"Hello,
Thank You for contacting us — we have relayed the abuse complaint details over to our end-user at this time, and have provided them with 72 hours to respond to the complaint, in addition to a link to our Terms of Service. Feel free to reach back out to us if you still notice this being unresolved after a few business days.
Thank You,"
This is the answer to all the tickets sent to them. After let's say 3 reports they "suspend" the abuser, but the suspended servers are back online in very short time, or weren't suspended at all (they just send a response and close the ticket without taking any action).
After the ticket is reopened with another report with the proof of abuse, I got same response with the prepared text with 72 hrs...
This behavior is simply not acceptable if your ToS is just a text and not a mandatory condition for fighting with the abusers...

Hi Ragna,
It appears this review is a repost of what you had previously submitted on Trustpilot -- the original, dated May 29, was deleted along with our detailed response. While we respect your right to share feedback, reposting in this way to push it back to the top and remove our reply doesn’t present the full context.
To clarify, our abuse team is fully staffed and actively reviews all reports submitted to reportabuse[@]racknerd[.]com. As is standard practice across the industry, abuse complaints are relayed to the respective end-user, who is required to take corrective action within a set timeframe. We also understand that at times, end-users of end-users may be involved (as we also host a lot of resellers, and hosting providers too). Therefore, we typically allow up to 72 hours for customers to respond to abuse complaints.
We operate a very large network with hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide, and while no provider is completely immune to occasional bad actors, we take pride in maintaining a clean network and keeping abuse levels low. When properly documented reports are submitted, our team responds swiftly and follows due process to ensure each matter is handled fairly and appropriately.
If you have specific cases you’d like re-reviewed, we encourage you to forward the details to us, and our team will gladly investigate further.
Signed up and paid for a minimal account to test out before proceeding with a larger order. A day in of configuration and I'm asked to provide ID to Swipe for verification. Which if you've ever dealt with Swipe as a small business might make you balk. Why wasn't I asked to do this at payment time or make it clear my account wasn't finalized? Time spent learning a new platform was wasted.
Their FAQ says they don't grant grace periods for refunds even if requested immediately after payment. Yet they don't hold themselves to the same standard. Asymmetric rules against the customer's interests is a sign to pass a business and look elsewhere.

Hi fozzybear,
Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. To be fully transparent, the verification flow you ran into is very rare — only about 1 in 500 new sign-ups might trigger Stripe’s risk engine in a way that causes us to request ID verification (for example, if Stripe thinks a payment is extremely high risk or has a high chance of being fraudulent). This is driven entirely by the payment processor’s fraud checks, not something we decide arbitrarily.
If you want to avoid the Stripe Identity flow completely, alternatives such as cryptocurrency or Alipay do not go through the same Stripe Identity verification, as they utilize different processors. That said, when verification is required, we do our best to be reasonable — we’re always willing to work with customers, including refunds, or even service extensions/unsuspensions if more time is needed, as we did here.
If you’d prefer to discuss another verification method you’re more comfortable with, email me directly at dustin[@]racknerd[.]com and we’ll sort it out.
P.S. Just to add, we don’t handle or store the verification ourselves — Stripe Identity handles that. All we receive is a simple pass/fail result via API, and that’s the only thing we look at. We’re in the hosting business, not the ID business :)
Thank you,
Dustin B. Cisneros

Have used a few different VPS providers over the years and RackNerd has been my favorite. They combine competitive pricing with solid and timely support and useful datacenter choices. Needed a VPS in an out-of-stock location. Contacted them and they deployed an instance in <24 hours and now have ~25ms ping. Good stuff.
I have been hosting a 4vCPU VPS with them for about 1.5 years now, and it has been rock solid, and the support has been reliable. The only time I needed support was to mount Custom ISOs (SystemRescue) onto the VPS. The VPS has changed purpose over several years, but is currently running several services like MantisBT, SVN Server, and so on in a Docker environment. I manage it all myself, and would consider myself very technically experienced.
The performance isn't the best, but is good for the price. Comparing BogoMIPs, I am getting about 4,400 on my $55-annualy RackNerd server compared to 6,000 on another VPS I pay $133 for annually (more than twice the price for 1/3 better performance). But overall, it seems to perform fine.
As with most real budget servers, there is no backup option. I have scripts that run automated file backups to an S3 account.
For disk images, I have a downloadable script. I boot the VPS with SystemRescue, download that script to it, and it stores a disk image to my S3 storage. It's a manual task and pretty slow, but it gets the job done when snapshots or backups aren't available.
RackNerd is the Top Class, Top Reliable among the budget VPS providers. I have been using their service from 5 years. No words can describe how amazing they are!!
Good value for money. I appreciate the 24/7 customer support and good uptime. I never experienced any downtime in the last 7 months when it comes to my vps.
been with them for nearly 2 years, performance of the vps is absolute pathetic , couldn't even run a single woocommerce website, asked support several times that what kind of a vps is this that can't load single website with 5 products(at that time).
Got stuck 2 years ago when i paid them initially but realized the performance is just a waste of time and support is pathetic , support just revolves around invoicing.
At present i have a server that expired but add-ons are till dec 2025. Add-ons are extra RAM, CPU but there is no server. so where should i use the extra RAM, CPU perhaps their support can enlighten everyone. WITH Over $10 in add-ons that i cannot use they won't let me copy data from the server to another server.
They never refund any money , they just give store credits. I made a mistake going with them and after realizing their performance i should have opened paypal dispute and got my money back.

Hi Atu — Thank You for allowing us the opportunity to be your provider for nearly 2 years. We sincerely apologize that your experience hasn't been what it should be, as we're quite known for providing services that deliver performance at all times. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any records of an "Atu Shar" in our client list, however, I will address your concerns to the best of my ability, from a generic standpoint.
In regards to your concerns about VPS performance, I first want to clarify that based on what you're saying, it appears that you purchased a VPS service with us, and by default our VPS are delivered as a fresh/new environment, with full root access. With our KVM VPS services being "unmanaged", unlike shared hosting where we would typically manage the software environment, the performance of websites hosted on your VPS (including WooCommerce sites) depends heavily on your OS and software related configurations, optimization of your software stack, etc. Many of our customers successfully run multiple high-traffic WooCommerce stores on our infrastructure without issue. To point you towards the right direction, typically clients prioritizing fast website load times run on either Nginx or OpenLitespeed (instead of Apache), and on top of that put websites behind a CDN like Cloudflare. Additionally, make sure your website does not have any plugins running unoptimized sql queries.
Regarding your comment about support revolving around "invoicing" - this is actually quite contrary to how we operate, so we'd be interested in taking a look at the ticket ID if you could please share it with us. Our staff are on salary, without any commissions or incentives tied to upselling. I've attempted to locate your account but couldn't find an active client account under your name, so without yet looking at the ticket, my guess is that add-ons were only discussed because you had inquired about additional resources at some point? We don't proactively push upgrades on customers, as that's simply not how our team operates or is evaluated. It's also important to remember that with unmanaged VPS services, we don't have visibility into your OS or software environments, nor do we have access unless explicitly granted. So when presented with broad/generic statements like "my website is slow" without specific technical details (especially on an unmanaged VPS service), our support team has limited ability to troubleshoot effectively, as the issue could stem from numerous different configurations within your environment.
In any case, we genuinely value your business and feedback. Customer satisfaction has always been the cornerstone of RackNerd's operations. If you're willing to give us an opportunity to address your concerns, please reach out directly to bizdev[@]racknerd[.]com. We would be happy to help and go above and beyond wherever possible. Once we can locate your account, we would be more than willing to thoroughly review your account details, and find a proper resolution for any outstanding concerns. We’re committed to finding a way to make things right, and sincerely look forward to hearing from you.
