The representatives were very helpful when I had questions concerning the process of selling, and they kept me up to date on what I needed to do to sell my car successfully. Autotrader let me know immediately about my messages, offers, and transactions. They kept me informed from start to finish. I would highly recommend Autotrader when selling an automobile.
A complete waste of money. AutoTrader feels less like a legitimate marketplace and more like clickbait that attracts scammers. The no-refund policy is especially telling, it leaves customers stuck paying for a service that provides little value while the company essentially washes its hands of the outcome. Save your money and look elsewhere.
You should have a "mostly good" category. The staff was great, very helpful and well informed. Sometimes more communication would be helpful, like when the buyer disappears for 5-6 days and can't be located (first about wiring payment and 2nd about scheduling delivery).
100% scam buyer offers from out of state. A complete waste of money. Shame on me for not reading reviews. I thought because of the KBB connection it was legit. Nope!! Use FB marketplace. Sold my car there.
Honestly, I was afraid of selling my car with the scams out there and the hassle. Autotrader was probably the easiest car sale I’ve ever done. They walk you through step-by-step and make sure your transaction is safe and secure. Well done!
This was my first transaction with autotrader and was very pleased on how smoothly the sale took place. From beginning to end, autotrader kept the process moving and was very helpful with questions along the way. I had chosen the $49 option for them to handle payment since I was in another state. Escrowing the monies help protect both of us. I would highly recommend autotrader if buying a vehicle.
Used AT as purchase platform for a Facebook Marketplace deal
I bought a car sight unseen on facebook marketplace, and used Autotrader PrivateSeller to ensure the purchase was safe (title transfer, guaranteed car in hand, etc.). The seller just listed the vin on auto trader for me to make an offer on to which they accepted. I chose to set up my own shipping as well which went fine. Would do the process the same way if it comes up again.
I’ve used Autotrader countless times over the years and unfortunately their services are not what they were and will not be using them again. The two stars is only for browsing on the purchase side the selling side would be a negative if possible. Previously you could purchase a “run till it sells ad” which is no longer available, but the worse part is all the spam/scams. In 24hrs I received 26 messages for my vehicle, everyone of them was a scam to purchase a fake vin check. I reached out to Autotrader for a refund a ad retraction in the first 24hrs and their response was “we want you to feels as comfortable as possible, we offer vin check through your ad you don’t need to purchase and additional. There’s a block option in messaging, just block the sender.” I have no interest in sorting through dozens of scam messages everyday, so waste of $50 no reason to even continue my newest posted ad.
First time buying exclusively online and I was skeptical, but the search for the exact make, model, year, and features found the exact match. Communicating via chat with the seller allowed me to ask the questions I otherwise would have asked in person, which was great. The seller was verified (a real, honest person!) which also gives confidence. My purchase required trucking which was seamlessly arranged thru Autotrader. I called customer service several times throughout the process and each time was a great experience. I'm likely to buy/sell again in the future.
I could only last 3 days on this site, as the 15 people inquiring about my car were 100% fraudsters. Every one of these "buyers" say... let's communicate with my email or here is my phone number, please text pics because they dont load up properly. Fraud. Beware. Many of these accounts were closed one or two days later. I had a horrible experience. FB Marketplace is the way to go....
Many bot/fake accounts messaging seller. But overall was smooth
Experience at the end was smooth, once a buyer was selected. However, the initial process was very rough. In the first 2-3 weeks of listing the ad, I was bombarded with dozens of fake/spam accounts asking me to either message a number or purchase a scam vehicle history report.
Also, the offer process needs to be improved. Once an offer is approved it is very tedious to change the price if it is lowered.
I did contact customer service a few times and their service was excellent and prompt.
This is an excellent platform and process for completing a private sale. The protections they have in place for both buyer and seller made it stress-free. Instructions were clear, and the outreach from the folks at Autotrader was timely and helpful.
My only gripe is how easy it is for scammers to roam free on the platform. How hard would it be to require identity verification before allowing someone to message a seller? They are easy to spot once you know what to look for, but still a hassle, and it’s obvious they are preying on people desperate to make a sale.
