What reviewers say

AI generated

Reviewers had a great experience with this company. Customers frequently praise the digital platform for its incredible flexibility, straightforward onboarding process, and extremely convenient virtual communication options that make starting therapy accessible. Many people appreciate the professional and deeply caring approach of their assigned therapists, noting how supportive and helpful the weekly sessions truly are. However, some people mentioned significant issues regarding high pricing structures and being continuously charged full fees even for unused therapy sessions. A few other consumers also felt that customer support was completely unhelpful and unresponsive when urgent billing concerns or scheduling problems arose.

What people say

Disappointed with the support before even getting the service I paid for

On the 4th of June, I decided to subscribe to BetterHelp with high hopes that I could get professional help immediately On the 5th of June, I got matched with a therapist. However, I was unable to schedule a session due to the platform error, which I reported immediately to support (Feedback #D6D1258). They said that it is a technical issue that they can't fix yet. So they offered me to manually schedule the therapy session. I sent them my preferred date and time (which was the earliest possible schedule according to the therapist's timetable). And I got no response, no scheduled session, nor the therapy itself the next day. On 7 June (2 days after my last email to them), I got a reply, and they asked me to choose a different date and time. On the same day, I sent them a separate email addressing how disappointed I was with the platform and the support. Imagine paying for a weekly subscription, hoping to get help, but you are left with 5 days remaining without getting the help you paid for. I have also emphasized that the subscription fee of USD 45 per week represents a significant financial commitment for someone living in a country with a much weaker currency. To my surprise, I got a response within less than 5 hours this time. They asked whether I would like to schedule the therapy while they extend my subscription to full 1 week, or cancel and refund my membership. Even in my disappointment, I was giving them a second chance due to my desperate need for professional help. It is now the 10th of June. 4 emails later, I still receive no response, no follow-up, and am still far from the help I needed. I have asked them for a cancellation and refund because I will seek help elsewhere. Perhaps this will get their attention? I don't know, I do feel like BetterHelp does not live up to its name and branding. Not only do I waste my time, but this experience also left me with bigger sadness in me, whether I deserve help or not.

Hi Sasha, Thank you for sharing about your experience. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality support to members, as we know how difficult it can be to take the step to ask for help! I've requested the email address linked to your account so that we can follow up with you directly and make sure you are taken care of in the way that works best for you.

I joined BetterHelp to find a good therapist

I joined BetterHelp to find a good therapist that would be a good match for me. And that's where the problem started. I was matched with a therapist, but because I couldn't verify my phone number, it was showing me an error message. I contacted BetterHelp customer support and they set up the session either way. Half an hour before the session, I logged in and the join video session button wasn't working. I missed my session even though I was looking forward to it. I think customer support could have guided me better and made this happen for me, and they just didn't. I think this is the last time that I ever try this platform. I genuinely had a horrible experience.

Hi Arianit, We can understand your disappointment and are sorry to hear you were not able to ultimately access your live session due to the phone number registration issue. Our developers have been made aware of this situation, and while we are always happy to provide membership extensions to help make up for these technical issues, it appears you've already been helped with a cancellation and refund. If you'd ever be open to giving us another try, we can have our Technical Support team work with you to get this matter sorted out. All the best, BetterHelp Team

Deceptive $0 Estimate and Refusal to Apply Valid EAP Benefits

I am filing a formal complaint against BetterHelp for deceptive billing practices, bait-and-switch pricing, and a refusal to honor valid in-network insurance benefits. Prior to signing up for BetterHelp, I received a valid Employee Assistance Program (EAP) authorization for therapy through United Healthcare, which prompted me to look for covered online therapy platforms. When I selected BetterHelp and initially signed up, the platform provided me with a written, guaranteed estimate of $0.00 per session. Relying on this $0 estimate and my pre-approved EAP coverage, I proceeded with booking and attending my sessions. Unbeknownst to me, BetterHelp delayed submitting my claims to my insurance provider for several months while they were getting my provider "rostered." When the claims finally processed months later, BetterHelp hit my account with a sudden, unannounced batch charge of over $600 for past sessions. Had I been accurately informed of the $86 per-session cost upfront, I would have made different financial and medical decisions. Furthermore, BetterHelp is an in-network provider for United Healthcare and is contractually obligated to accept UHC EAP authorizations. I possess two valid EAP authorization codes that cover a total of 4 sessions. Instead of billing the EAP program as contracted, BetterHelp erroneously billed my standard medical insurance. When I provided the valid authorization codes and asked them to correct the claims, BetterHelp's support supervisors explicitly refused in writing. They stated that they are "unable to update the payment method for past sessions attended retroactively" simply because their internal automated software does not have the capability to do so. A company's internal software limitations do not void my valid, pre-approved medical benefits or absolve BetterHelp of their contractual obligations as an in-network vendor. I have exhausted all internal customer service channels, and BetterHelp continues to refuse manual ledger corrections for both the EAP codes and the erroneous $0 estimate.

Hi Gerald, We're sorry about the frustration you've experienced throughout the process of attempting to apply EAP or insurance benefits. While we work with many EAPs and insurance carriers, we do not work with all. Typically, if we are in contract with your EAP, we would be able to first help you get those benefits set up. When those benefits expire, you can then check your insurance eligibility for coverage of continued BetterHelp services. In any case, we appreciate you providing us with your contact information so we can investigate this further. We will follow up with you with more information soon.

Tried to contact them multiple times…

Tried to contact them multiple times and no response. I haven’t had a single session and want a refund but they dodge contact so that you are unable to obtain or discuss a refund for your payment.

This is the WORST platform ever!!!

This is the WORST platform ever!!!!  The site is extremely glitchy and also, even though they say they offer phone appointments, when it's time for your visit the only option is video.  The therapists are flakey and unprofessional.  First I have a therapist who within the first session, called my sister and husband a narcissist!  Then after requesting a new therapist, she cancelled my first session with no explanation and then rescheduled my appointment without even checking with me or my schedule.  Then when I scheduled a new session - she DIDN'T SHOW UP!!!!  I am waiting on this call now for 50 minutes!  I have been messaging her through the app and she has not even replied once!  I have called customer service and have been on hold with them for 28 minutes now!  Really unbelievable!

We want to be sure our Clinical Operations team is made aware of these claims and can investigate them to ensure accountability. We'd also like to be sure we make this right for you from a billing perspective, as the experience you've described is far from common! I've requested the email address linked to your BetterHelp account so we can follow-up with you to get this resolved.

Rip off impossible to cancel

Impossible to cancel they rip you off and keep billing. Running chargebacks through the bank.

Best Therapy Help

Better help has always been a high recommendation from my friends if I ever needed any therapy or help. The availability and price is amazing for such amazing people to help you and stand by you with no judgement and walk the path with you to a better life. Never be afraid to seek help when you need it! I highly recommend them!

A reliable platform that actually delivers results!

BetterHelp is the second online therapy platform I've tried, and it is a massive improvement. My previous experience on another platform seemed to be a lot of space for talk with very little action and opportunities from them, but BetterHelp offers so many tangible opportunities to truly improve your overall mental health. I absolutely love the variety of resources they provide. Along with the weekly one-on-one visits with my therapist, I really enjoy the educational classes and the group therapy sessions. I also appreciate that they offer a variety of different subscription plans you can choose from to fit your specific needs. Overall, this is a very reliable platform that gives you the tools you actually need to make progress. I highly recommend it!

I wasn't sure where to start

I wasn't sure where to start, dreaded reading through and picking a therapist. The questionnaire made the process so easy. I ended up being matched with someone perfect for me and my situation. So grateful to have found this. The Better help website is easy to navigate. Communication options to text, call, video call, and schedule/reschedule are simple as well. Overall good experience.

I have had issues with therapy because…

I have had issues with therapy because every therapist I had quit or took a different job. I knew that I needed to get back into therapy, but I wanted to do it from home so my husband wouldn't have to miss work every week. I came across BetterHelp and since starting with my therapist on BetterHelp, I have become a happier less anxious person. My therapist listens to me and if I am having a rough day, I can send him a message and he usually responds that day. Sometimes he will squeeze me in if I need a session before my scheduled session. I would recommend BetterHelp to everyone, in fact I told my best friend to try it out when she talked about doing therapy.

Better Help; Affordable Therapy from home

Better Help is such an easy, affordable way to do therapy whether it be for a short or long time. They have a plethora of qualified professional therapists that are capable of meeting your needs. If you do struggle to find a therapist that suits you, get in touch with the team and they will curate some options directly applicable to your needs. You can do therapy via chat, phone call or video call. It does depend on the therapist but most are very flexible. You can also chose whether you want a casual tone or a more direct tone from your therapist and you simply don’t get these choices in a face to face appointment. These little details for me made all the difference. Good luck on your journey.
