My experience with Thumbtack

My experience with Thumbtack I decided to deactivate my Thumbtack account after realizing that the platform’s lead pricing model simply doesn’t work for my business. Professionals are automatically charged for leads, even when the customer doesn’t become a client. Customers can communicate initially and then disappear, yet the professional is still responsible for the lead charge. I also found the service categories too limited. For example, one lead contacted me specifically for state tax preparation. My business only prepares state returns when they are filed with a federal return, but Thumbtack doesn’t give professionals enough options to clearly define those service limitations. I’ve requested two lead refunds based on situations where the leads did not result in a viable client opportunity, and both requests were denied. As a small business owner, I have to be able to see a reasonable return on every marketing dollar I spend. At this point, Thumbtack feels more like I’m paying for access to customer inquiries rather than paying for legitimate opportunities to acquire clients. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend the platform based on my experience. I’m deactivating my account and will be investing my marketing budget elsewhere.

We completely understand how important it is for every marketing dollar to bring in real business, and hearing that you had this experience with lead charges and category settings is tough. Pros are charged the way they are because we can never guarantee a hire. Our goal is to connect you with local customers and from there, the job is yours to win! We want to make sure your feedback about service preferences and specific return policies gets reviewed directly by our team. Please give our team another call at (866) 501-5809 if you're up for it. We would love to try and help you get back to enjoying Thumbtack.

This is a waste of time and money

This is a waste of time and money. Who is coming up with how much a lead costs to what the job is worth? How is it fair to charge me for a lead when I am the first pro to reply and the customer replies to a different pro? I am being charged for a lead when I haven't even spoken to the person. The jobs that we were hired on is only enough to pay for the leads. Tell me how do you charge $55 on a palm tree lead when palm tree trimmings start at $50. I would have to charge $150+ to charge for the palm tree trim to cover the $55 lead cost and make maybe $15 after expenses. Is a tree service coming up with the lead prices or someone who has no idea what to charge for tree work? This was beyond stressful and not at all what I had expected. Makes sense how you are able to get rich off of this. It took me about 3 weeks to figure that out what a scam this is.

We hear your frustration regarding how lead pricing and customer connections impacts your business. Every dollar you invest in growing your services needs to make sense, and it is tough when lead costs feel out of line with smaller jobs like palm tree trimming. We want our support team to look directly into your account and review these specific charges with you, so please connect with us at (866) 501-5809.

I’ve used Thumbtack for years

I’ve used Thumbtack for years and have sold many remodeling projects from Thumbtack leads in the past. Five or six years ago, Thumbtack was actually one of our better sources of new business. Unfortunately, in my experience, the quality of the leads has deteriorated substantially. Far too many of the homeowners we receive now seem to be very early-stage shoppers, extremely price-focused, difficult to contact, or simply not serious about moving forward with a project. Even when you do get an appointment, you can spend a significant amount of time driving to the home, discussing the project, preparing options and pricing, only to discover that the homeowner is collecting quotes from multiple contractors with very little real buying intent. My biggest issue is the definition of a “lead.” A homeowner requesting information or clicking to compare contractors is not necessarily a qualified prospect, yet contractors can pay significant amounts of money for access to these inquiries. I understand that Thumbtack cannot guarantee a sale. That's part of running a business. But there needs to be a reasonable relationship between what contractors are paying and the quality and intent of the prospects being delivered. What makes this particularly disappointing is that Thumbtack used to work for us. We generated real business from it. Based on my recent experience, I no longer believe the economics or the amount of time required make sense for our remodeling company. We're moving our marketing dollars toward channels where we can generate and qualify our own prospects instead.

Long-time Pro, extremely disappointed with Thumbtack’s policy

I am extremely dissatisfied with how Thumbtack handled this situation. I have been using Thumbtack for years to generate business, and my ability to receive new leads was suddenly restricted because Thumbtack required another background check. I immediately complied with every request. The SSN verification failed twice despite my providing the requested information and my Social Security card. I then had to submit an alternative SSN-less background check using my government-issued ID. My biggest concern is Thumbtack’s policy of restricting an established professional from receiving new leads while a re-verification initiated by Thumbtack is still being processed. I did nothing wrong and complied with every requirement, yet I temporarily lost access to an important source of business income because of a verification process that was outside of my control. If Thumbtack requires existing professionals to undergo additional or repeated verification, they should be allowed to continue working and receiving leads while that verification is pending, unless there is an actual safety or compliance concern. A verification initiated by Thumbtack should not automatically prevent a professional with an established history on the platform from continuing to operate their business. The support representative I spoke with was helpful and respectful, and my complaint is not directed at them personally. My dissatisfaction is with Thumbtack’s policies and the way this process affects professionals who rely on the platform to earn a living. This experience has significantly reduced my trust in Thumbtack. I will now seriously consider reducing the amount of business I do through Thumbtack and shifting toward more reliable sources of leads and other platforms where my ability to operate my business cannot be suddenly disrupted by a verification process that I did not initiate.

We understand how frustrating a temporary pause in leads can be, especially for an established pro who relies on our platform to reach customers. Platform security and user safety are paramount, which is why background checks are required for anyone advertising services on Thumbtack. We know any interruption impacts your business, but all account status changes are made in alignment with our Terms of Use. We appreciate your feedback as we maintain a safe marketplace.

Thumbtack is a borderline scam

Thumbtack is a borderline scam. Over priced leads and an unhelpful support team that doesn't follow their own refund policies.

We regret hearing about your frustration with lead costs and your experience with our team. We want our pros to succeed and feel confident in their investment. While we have set criteria for when refunds apply, you can review our full guidelines here: https://help.thumbtack.com/article/refund-policy. We appreciate your feedback as we work to improve.

Terrible service

Terrible service. I have been receiving leads that are supposedly certified, but they are scams. I pay between $70 and $ 90 per lead, and these people turn out to be scams. I contacted Thumbtack, but they never respond and seem unable to find a solution. I don't understand why Thumbtack has chat and conversation logs if they can't see the real scam situations. Last week, I worked with a lead who refused to pay. I called Thumbtack, and they said they need to investigate. But with all the conversation records, why isn't there a resolution? This app does not provide PROS with security or trust because I spent hundreds expecting good service, but there are no guarantees at all.

Workers were great

Workers were great. Thumbtack has a form, easily missed, that allows them to sell your information. Since i day after job, I am getting 10-15 robo calls from assorted #s seeking personal information. They do not stop, even though the number has been on the Do Not Call registry for months. DO NOT USE

Reply from Thumbtack2026-08-26

We understand how important privacy is. That is why do not sell phone numbers to third-party callers. Your contact details are only shared directly with the local pros involved with your specific job request so they can connect with you. We want to help look into what might have happened with your account details here. You can reach out to our Support team at (866) 501-5809 so we can review your project settings and get this sorted out for you.

Although I had a poor experience with…

Although I had a poor experience with one of the professionals I hired through Thumbtack, I want to give credit to Thumbtack itself. After filing a complaint and making several attempts to resolve the situation, Thumbtack ultimately came through and corrected the issue. The app is easy to use, convenient, and makes it simple to find and communicate with professionals. Most importantly, I appreciate that Thumbtack took my complaint seriously and worked toward a resolution. While my experience with the particular professional was disappointing, my experience with Thumbtack as a platform was ultimately positive because they stood behind their customer and helped make the situation right.

DO NOT USE this service if you don't have money to burn.

As a professional using Thumbtack to market my business, I’m extremely dissatisfied with its lead-generation and billing practices. It has recently come to my attention that customers may not be shown contractors’ base pricing before selecting professionals to contact. This can result in customers contacting multiple contractors, only to discover afterward that the available services exceed their budget. The customer may hire no one, yet each selected contractor can still be charged for the lead. In that situation, the customer’s request goes unfulfilled, the contractors receive no work, and Thumbtack still collects its fees. In my opinion, this creates a serious conflict of interest. Thumbtack benefits financially from generating contacts, regardless of whether the customer was given enough pricing information to make a realistic selection or whether any contractor ultimately gets hired. I believe Thumbtack should display meaningful base-pricing information before customers select contractors and should not charge professionals for leads that were never financially viable. Contractors deserve transparent fees and genuinely qualified leads—not charges generated from customers who were unaware of the likely cost. Based on my experience as a paying professional, I consider these practices unfair and lacking in transparency. I would caution other small-business owners to understand exactly when Thumbtack charges for leads and how little control they may have over whether those leads represent realistic opportunities.

A company I hired didn’t follow through on all services paid for and Thumbtack stepped in and I was reimbursed for the service not performed. They took action quickly. Will definitely use again without fear of a provider not following through.

They are useless

They are useless, have some shitty department called “Trust and Safety Team” which is just bunch of useless people sitting there and making their own rules that don’t make any sense at all. They aren’t google or facebook hey! Never support pro or customer. They don’t let you edit your review and when you contact support you just waste your time for useless conversations with useless support representatives. 0 out of 10. I hope this company will get the deepest as possible.

A lot of of us feel like we were…

A lot of of us feel like we were getting ripped off and customers are choosing “open to other dates” which screws up any sort of refund for us. It has gotten worse and prices have gone up. Thumbtack needs to think about their vendors and reassess how they feel when it comes to refunds.

Corrupt, the business, corrupt leads, corrupt customer assistance

Thumbtack used to be profitable with quality customers. Now frivolous leads come in sometimes even with disconnected numbers and you get charged $75-$151. depending on your settings and they will refuse to refund it, avoid the conversation does not return your voicemail and you get stuck paying upwards of $100. for a disconnected phone Lead. Change your setting to where you don't pay so much per lead and you don't get any leads...Going forward they completely deleted my account as I got caught up with my neighbor, as he tried to jump me so I Pepper Sprayed him. Officer said "Do you Know how much Pepper Spray Hurts? isn't that the point, to stop your attacker before he can do Harm? and I get a Misdemeanor. I have a lawyer on the case set for my not guilty trial in September and Thumbtack sees this pop up on my background check and completely Erased, Deletes my account within a week. Treated me as if I had some criminal background which I certainly do not… How the F can you go and delete a profile that has been growing and establishing for over 10 years with over 100 5-star reviews and thousands of project pictures all erased within one week…. They certainly can go kick rocks. On the other side of things losing our Thumbtack account is no Loss as we will not play victim to their ridiculous Lead Charging Game. We have moved on from Them as there are far better Lead companies...Those that will refund you when a Losey Lead comes your ways, those that aren't trying to tell you a Lead costs is upwards of $151. Again GO Kick Rocks Thumbtack.

Satisfied, but questioning policy

As a customer, I’ve been happy with most of the pros I’ve contacted over several past years. There were only a few who didn’t finish up as expected, but Thumbtack made it easy to choose from a variety of pros and prices. One of the things that astounded me however, was Thumbtack’s sudden overreach of every move these pros made by text, phone, etc. That’s not going to keep skilled existing or new pros. One exchange I had with a pro, second time I hired, top rated. He did an excellent job on light installation and cabinet balancing. He left small tool behind which was reported on our exchange…with nearby location. Not necessary…AI isn’t the solution to everything. It overrides common sense.

We love hearing that you've found great pros for your light installation and home projects over the years! Thank you for sharing your thoughtful feedback regarding our messaging features as well. While our goal is to make communicating with pros simple, we know technology should never get in the way of common sense. We appreciate your insights as we work to continually refine our platform!

Extremely disappointed with Thumbtack

Extremely disappointed with Thumbtack. I was charged for leads while my calendar was BLOCKED and I was unavailable. One lead even had a response deadline while my availability was closed. I contacted support and they still refused to refund me. Thumbtack is charging professionals for leads they cannot reasonably accept. In my opinion, this is unfair and feels like stealing money from hard-working professionals. Be very careful using this platform and monitor your charges closely.

Reply from Thumbtack2026-08-19

We understand how frustrating lead charges can be when you're unavailable. Blocking your calendar manages booking requests, but completely pausing new customer matches requires hiding your profile. You can learn how to hide your business here: https://help.thumbtack.com/article/hide-my-business. Thank you for your dedication as a pro on our platform; we genuinely appreciate your feedback.

Terrible Experiene with Thumbtack, Inc.

If I could leave zero stars, I would. My dryer broke and Samsung referred this to Thumbtack. Thumbtack charged my credit card in advance to make the appointment and then cancelled my appt. 15 minutes beforehand. When I called to reschedule or find out why, they weren't able to give me any information and said they probably couldn't find someone to do the job. They also said I would have to wait 5 days before they could schedule a new appt. I will just call my own dryer repair shop and would have done so in the beginning but the error code on my dryer gave me the phone number to call for Samsung. I didn't realize they were just subbing out the job to this terrible company. I would never use them for anything.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Thumbtack is a platform that connects customers with independent local service professionals— Thumbtack does not charge customers directly for services, as payments and pricing are determined by the service providers.
